External PR11 00o 05.09.2011 Green fingered Charlie urges Surrey residents to get composting Gardening favourite Charlie Dimmock is urging Surrey residents to make the most of the warm weather and get composting. To coincide with the 11th annual Compost Awareness Week, which ran from 1-7 May, the ex-Ground Force presenter has pledged her support to Surrey Waste Partnership’s composting campaign. Charlie said: “Composting at home is the greenest, most natural way to deal with your garden and food waste and it’s easier than you think. It only takes a few quick and easy steps to get started and yet can make a really positive difference to the environment.” Discounted bins are available through the Surrey Waste Partnership*, and there are simple step-by-step guides available online at www.surreywastepartnership.org.uk on how to make your own compost heap, get started with composting and other useful advice. Surrey Waste Partnership chairman Jean Pearson is also keen to encourage more people to try composting. Jean said: "To coincide with Compost Awareness Week, we proactively encouraged everyone with space in their garden to give composting a go. Even those of us who are already composting at home might be able to compost more things more often, like shredded paper or the contents of your vacuum cleaner.” Out of a total 536,000 tonnes of household waste currently produced in Surrey each year, it's estimated that around a third could be composted which would save the county an estimated £8.7 million in reduced landfill and green waste disposal costs each year. To find out more about how to get composting or buy a reduced-price bin, starting from only £14.00 visit www.surreywastepartnership.org.uk or call 0844 571 4444. *The Surrey Waste Partnership is made up of Surrey County Council and the 11 district and borough councils in the county. It aims to manage Surrey’s waste in the most efficient, economic and sustainable way possible.
