iCRAG PhD studentship: RM1.4 PhD1 Fingerprinting and assessing reactivity of past and future aggregates A four year PhD research studentship opportunity (starting September 2015) in the field of geochemistry for highly motivated individuals at the Department of Geology, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. This project attempts to address questions through the trace element analysis and SEM analysis of pyrite: 1) Can trace elements in pyrite fingerprint the quarry source? 2) Can trace element analysis of pyrite (in aggregate which has undergone accelerated weathering) provide insight on aggregate reactivity? The candidate will use the Department's state-of-the-art geochemical facility: (www.tcd.ie/Geology/research/facilities/geochemfacility/geochronology/), and a SEM. The project will include the development of accelerated weathering experiment and collaboration with industrial partners. The candidate will be part of a larger research team belonging to the Irish Centre for Research in Applied Geosciences (iCRAG), which is funded under the SFI Research Centres Programme and is co-funded under the European Regional Development Fund. It is supporting >40 new early career research opportunities. The ideal candidate is a Geology graduate with demonstrated laboratory experience in geochemistry. The project is open to EU students only (students who have been resident for 3 out of the last 5 years in the EU) and includes fees and a tax-free stipend of €18,000 per annum for 48 months. Prospective candidates should send an academic CV and the names and contact details of two academic referees to goodhuer@tcd.ie. Evaluation of applications will begin by April 1st 2015. The start date of the position is September 2015
