Reviewing existing literature and conducting a 5 week ethnographic case-study in Lobamba, Swaziland

Investigating to what extent Swaziland is a ‘Protective Environment’ for children according to the so-entitled UNICEF
framework, including factors concerning HIV/AIDS

Considering whether a Western, paternalistic framework was appropriate to the different economic, social and
cultural values of a developing Southern African country.

Working at the Neighbourhood Care Point in Lobamba, Swaziland, supporting a local charity in their work with
orphans and vulnerable children often affected and/or infected by the AIDS epidemic
