MEDICAL RESIDENTS AND THEIR ELECTIVE EXPERIENCES OVERSEAS Dr. David Campbell’s visit to Haiti – funded by the Cumming School of Medicine’s Medical Trainee Fund In November 2015 I had the opportunity to spend a week in central Haiti working in Mirebalais with EqualHealth. I was assigned as a Visiting Professor to teach Advanced Cardiac Life Support at Partners in Health’s new regional teaching hospital (HUM: Hôpital Universitaire de Mirebalais). I taught 3 separate cohorts of 12-20 students (residents, nurses, attending physicians) a two-day course in ACLS. While it was a very busy week, it was also very rewarding to be able to see the students learn and grow in their competency to run a code and resuscitate patients. Given that this was the very first time the course has been offered at HUM, it was exciting to be a part of improving the quality of care that is offered to the patients of the hospital. I remain hopeful that we can continue to build capacity in resuscitative care through ongoing trainings and development. We made plans for our next visit at which point we will focus on training a core group that will become the code team in the hospital as well as developing trainers who will be able to continue to provide ongoing simulation sessions for training and practice purposes between our periodic visits.
