Classics Department Summer Review Work

YOU WILL NEED TO KNOW GRAMMAR FORMS & VOCABULARY
All students entering Latin II and up are strongly recommended to review their grammar
forms and vocabulary from the previous year when they return in the fall. Between the end
of the second and the fourth weeks of school, students will be assessed on the review vocabulary
and forms. Accordingly, students are advised to review for these assessments over the summer.
Expectations for grammar review are downloadable separately from the public Google
Drive folder Classics Department Summer Work. You may download, print and practice
forms as much as you need and utilize your textbook (PDF or print) as needed for review.
Students may study vocabulary lists directly from the textbook, Jenney’s First Year Latin, and/or
make flashcards with traditional index cards or software and apps available to them on their
mobile devices. Some students will find that they can study the vocabulary very effectively by
going to http://www.quia.com/pages/flinthillvocab.html. There you will find chapter lists of all
the Jenney vocabulary, with online flashcard practice drills. Please be sure to study the
vocabulary required for the class you are entering in the fall.

KEEP YOUR TEXTBOOK
All students (especially those in Latin II/II Honors and III/III Honors) should keep their Jenney
First Year Latin texts, as we will continue to use the grammar exercises and readings included
throughout the year.

REVIEW OLD MATERIAL
Finally, while this is only recommended, most students will find revisiting previous chapters
covered in the Jenny First Year Latin textbook helpful. Retranslating exercises and checking
them against the corrections made in class the previous year is a good way to review and practice
the skills that are foundational for success at the next level. Furthermore, many students find that
revisiting older chapters at a later stage allows them either to refresh forgotten concepts or
correct previous misconceptions of the material.

QUESTIONS?
Please contact Howard Chang at hchang@flinthill.org if you have any questions.
N.B. Mr. Chang will not be checking email from 6/23 until 7/2 and from 7/26 until 8/3, as he
will either be out of town and away from regular internet access during those periods. You may
also try to reach Mr. Ken Andino at kandino@flinthill.org if you need immediate assistance.
Please be mindful that response times during the summer break may not be as immediate as
during the school year.
