COURSE DESCRIPTION: Mastery of advanced cosmetology techniques including hair designs, professional cosmetology services and workplace competencies. Upon successful completion of the course the student will be awarded 3 semester hours. COURSE FOCUS: The central focus of this course is to empower the student to develop quality designs in hair while stimulating the creative process. The student will be challenged to perfect basic skills and competencies and to develop the understanding that time is money in the beauty industry. Special attention will be given to develop self-reliance, leadership and organizational skills in the student. PRE-REQUISITE: CSME 1405, CSME 1410, CSME 1453 TEXTBOOK INFORMATION: Milady’s Standard Cosmetology Textbook, Theory and Practical Textbook 2012 Edition, Milady’s Study Guide 2012 Edition. COURSE COMPETENCIES: This course is designed to assist the student attain the following competencies: Understand the basic concepts and develop proficiency in cosmetology skills to prepare the student for entry level employment as a stylist. Exhibit the ability to use materials and time efficiently Participate as a team member, serve clients in the clinic and exercise leadership skills. Exhibit the initiative to organize and maintain a schedule of daily skills and competencies. Identify and apply effective supervisory techniques. Identify, describe and design current fashion styles incorporating color into designs. GRADE DETERMINATION: GRADE POLICY Attendance 30% 90-100=A Mid-term 20% 80-89 =B Final 20% 79-70 = C Unit Exams 10% 69-60 =D Participation 20% 59 and under =F TEST AND SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT: Students will be required to complete daily progress chart sheets and recap sheets and projects (TDLR requirements) weekly. Unit Exams will be given for each chapter. The students are responsible for the completion of the study guides. Please come prepared for class every day. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Students are expected to attend class daily and be on time. Any student absent from class for 3 days will be dropped from the course and information will be sent to E-Alert-(HCCS). Students that come into school late will be deducted hours. (Including lecture and laboratory time). WITHDRAWALS: It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw officially from a course to keep from receiving an “F” for the class. DRESS CODE: Students in the cosmetology operator candidate program are expected to be self-motivated individuals and to stay on task at all times. Students must be dressed professionally and appropriately in accordance with the department dress code. Dress Code is as follows for both male and female: Black medical type scrubs (cotton), black shoes (nursing type) no sandals or backless shoes. Hose or socks must be worn. Men should dress accordingly – there should be no sagging scrub bottoms. (Undershirts black) STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT IN PROPER UNIFORM WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE –AND ABLE TO RETURN IN PORPER ATTIRE SCHOLASTIC DISHONESTY AND CLASSROOM CONDUCT: Students are expected to conduct themselves with honor and integrity in fulfilling the course requirements. Any student found cheating on a test, plagiarizing or in collusion will receive an “F” for the program. See student handbook for college policy on academic dishonesty, and disciplinary problems. Any student that is disruptive or disrespectful will be dismissed from the program. Students on clinic floor are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times. Loud boisterous conduct, being disrespectful to any student and instructor, refusing to do assignments or refusing to serve a client will constitute grounds for dismissal. MAKE-UP POLICY FOR MISSED ASSIGNMENTS OR TEST: There will be no make-up for missed unit exams. Make-up for a missed mid-term or final test will be permitted only if the student informs the instructor in advance. The student must make arrangements to take the missed test no later than 3 days after the original test date. It should be understood that the make-up test would not be the same as the test given to the rest of the student body. Disruptive behavior activities which interfere with teaching and/or learning will not be tolerated and may result in an administrative withdrawal without refund. Students not prepared for class will be asked to leave. Students not participating in assigned tasks will be asked to leave. I WILL ALLOW YOU TO HAVE THEM ON VIBRATE BUT I WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO TALK ON IT ON THE LAB AREA NOR THE CLASSROOM WHILE INSTRUCTION.
