Lewiston Art Festival Green Team Information Sign-in: At the beginning of your shift, sign in at Modern’s tent located on Center Street near 6th, next to the ArtZone tent and near St. Peter’s Church. You will get your Green Team Tshirt, cold water and any other supplies or directions you may need. Please sign-in legibly and we will make you a certificate to verify the time you contributed. At the Stations: Encourage use of recycling & composting containers. Show people which containers to use and answer their questions. If they ask questions you don’t know the answer to, direct them to Modern’s tent, website (www.ModernCorporation.com) or Facebook page (Facebook.com/ModernDisposal). Monitor containers for contamination – remove small amounts with trash grabbers or gloves. When bags are full, remove them and replace them. Set full bags at the end of the station for the floater to take to the dumpsters. Smile and have fun! At the end of your shift, sign out at Modern’s booth by the ArtZone. Sunday last shift, sign out by the dumpsters. Floaters: Bring cold water to station volunteers. Gather full bags and take to the dumpsters by the Fire Station with access from 5th or 6th Street. We’ll have a wheelbarrow to use. Last Shift of the Day: Saturday: For containers less than half full, leave the bags and close the lids. Otherwise, put in a clean liner bag and take full bags to the dumpsters by the Fire Station with access from 5th or 6th Street. Move containers and stations to a clear spot at the curb, out of the middle of the street. Sunday: Close cart lids and wheel them to the dumpsters by the Fire Station with access from 5th or 6th Street. Place bags in the appropriate dumpster and line the carts along the fence or load onto the Modern Trailer. Move trash barrels to the curb. Move stations to the curb so vehicles can get through. Additional instructions will be provided at the event. Sign-Out: Sign-out at Modern’s booth by the ArtZone at the end of your shift. Sunday Last Shift: Sign-out will be moved to the dumpster area. Lewiston Art Festival Green Team Information INFORMATION FOR ANSWERING QUESTIONS Why Recycle at the Festival? Lighten environmental impact of the event. Preserve natural resources and provide material to make new products. 15-20 PET plastic water bottles is enough to make one T-shirt. Save energy - Recycling 12 plastic bottles saves the energy needed to run an air conditioner for 1 hour. More on Recycling Modern uses high tech machines and manual labor to sort and separate recyclable material. Separated materials are sold as commodities to be made into new products. Containers should be empty. Rinsing reduces odor and pest problems, but containers don’t need to be sanitized for recycling. Small items like straws, lids and K cups are hard to capture in our sorting process because they are small and fall through the equipment. More information is available on Modern’s website (www.ModernCorporation.com), Facebook page (Facebook.com/ModernDisposal) and at Modern’s booth by the ArtZone. Why Compost at the Festival? Convert food and food-soiled paper waste into a resource. Food scraps are 14% of solid waste thrown out in the U.S. and recycling them reduces waste. Compost use improves soil structure, reduces energy and water needed for plant growth, and reduces use of petroleum-based fertilizers. More on Composting Modern uses aerated static piles and turned windrows to make compost. Air and moisture help microorganisms break down the material and reduce odors.
