Appendix D Sample Volunteer Instructions The Event Name will be putting in place the principles of “Zero Waste” for today’s event. We hope to maximize the recovery of all recyclable and compostable material and divert as much as 70 to 80% of the normal waste from the landfill. We have set up Number “Zero Waste Stations” around the event. Each “Zero Waste Station” will have containers for recyclables, compostables and trash you job will be to ensure the material is properly separated. Each container has been labeled and uses different colored bags for its contents: ● Recyclables: HI-5 containers, other recyclable containers Clear bags. ● Compostables: Foodwaste, food-service ware (plates, cups, utensils), and other paper products (napkins, paper towels, on newspaper, etc) – Green bags or Clear bags with Green lettering. ● Trash: Whatever’s left - Black bags. Basically, your job during the event will be servicing the stations, emptying full containers and taking the bags either to the dumpster (trash), or to the designated areas for recyclables and compostables. All bags should be tied. To insure that the public understands which materials should be deposited in which containers, and to make sure that as little contamination as possible is deposited in the recycling and compostables containers we are requesting that you explain the process to the public if they have any questions. You should try to make sure that food waste does not end up in the recycling bin, as it will make separating the bottles and cans later a messy job, but unless you can easily remove any contamination, leave it in and it can be separated later. If it’s non-compostable material in the compost bin they can pick it out once the rest of the material has been broken down. Should you have any questions please contact Name (Phone).
