SIGs
What is NSSLHA?
 A pre-professional membership association for both graduate and undergraduate students
interested in the study of communication sciences and disorders
 Provides members with opportunities to:
 Get acquainted with other students and faculty
 Explore professional issues
 Perform community service
Hands & Voices
 NSSLHA’s charity for the year
 It is a non-profit, parent-driven organization dedicated to supporting families of children who
are deaf or hard of hearing
 Represents people from all different approaches to, and experiences with, deafness or hearing
loss
Family Day
 Saturday, September 13th
 Starts at 8:30am in sch130 (Light breakfast provided prior to this)
 At 9:45am we will move to Fairchild hall for presentations from professors and staff, hearing
screenings, clinic tours, and a provided lunch
We need volunteers to work the apparel table, help with chair drop off, help with getting families
pamphlet and cleaning up breakfast, selling raffle tickets, helping setting up and cleaning up lunch, and
helping to direct families to presentations!

This year’s SIGs:
1. Auditory Processing Disorders (APD)
 Faculty advisors: Teri Tyra & Candice Osenga
 Collaboration between speech and audiology (as well as other disciplines)
 Diagnosing and treating APD.
 Provide some knowledge about what APD is and what we can do about it.
 We will be reading a book: Title TBD
 We expect that we will meet monthly and will try our best to find a convenient time for
the majority of the group.
2. Professional Voice
 Faculty advisors- Dr. Smith & Dr. Vinney
 Look at the special skills and unique needs of professional voice users with a focus on
singers and actors.
 Guest speaker: instructor from the school of theatre
 Organize a trip to a play on campus, or a movie night
 Frozen yogurt afterward to talk about the demands of vocal performance.
 If you are interested in singing, theater, music, or any kind of professional voice use, this
is the SIG for you!
