Proclamation
“The Value of Water to [Your City]”
Whereas, the infrastructure that brings water to and from homes and businesses is essential to
the quality of life and economic vitality of the city of [Insert]; and
Whereas, the average American uses 176 gallons of water per day, or 64,240 gallons a year; and
Whereas, [city or utility] treats over XXX,XXX gallons of drinking water per day and over
XXX,XXX gallons of wastewater and stormwater per day providing reliable and clean water to XXX,XXX
people; and
[Insert specific projects, or relevant city water facts]
Whereas, the pipes in [city] average XX years of age, well past their recommended lifespan; and
Whereas, 1.7 trillion gallons of drinking water are lost every year to fault, aging, or leaky pipes;
and
Whereas, one-fifth of the US economy would grind to a halt without a reliable and clean source
of water; and
Whereas, for every one job we create in the water sector, another 3.68 jobs are added in the
national economy. And for every $1 spent on infrastructure improvements, the US generates $6 in
returns; and
Therefore, be it resolved, that the City of [your city] recognizes that that water is essential to
quality of life, environmental sustainability, and economic competitiveness; and
Therefore, be it further resolved, that the City of [your city] is dedicated to investing in our
water and wastewater systems for the benefit of our citizens, now and into the future, and
acknowledges the importance of educating the public about the value of water through the Imagine A
Day Without Water events and efforts.
