About Safe Work Australia
Safe Work Australia’s primary responsibility is to lead the development of national policy to improve
work health and safety and workers’ compensation arrangements across Australia. Safe Work
Australia is a tripartite body with the following members:
 an independent chair
 members representing the Commonwealth and each state and territory
 members representing the interests of workers
 members representing the interests of employers, and
 the Chief Executive Officer.
To support Safe Work Australia, we have a small, engaged and busy workforce that leads national
projects to develop policy and supporting guidance related to work health and safety and workers’
compensation. We also work with our members on key projects designed to drive key national
activities to promote our vision of healthy, safe and productive working lives.
We have four branches: Review and Engagement, Policy and Services, Work Health and Safety
and Explosives and Guidance.
About the position
The advertised Director position is in the Plant and Licensing Section which forms part of the Work
Health and Safety Branch. The Director is responsible for a team that carries out a range of
functions including:
 developing high level work health and safety policy on topics including plant, high risk
work, construction and safe design
 providing specialist and technical information and advice to the Chief Executive Officer,
Minister, Members, jurisdictions, unions, industry and to the public on a range of high risk
plant and licensing topics
 maintaining and developing national assessment instruments and units of competency for
high risk work
 researching, analysing and interpreting complex legislation to support the development of
policy advice including anticipating problems and contributing to issues management
 leading the provision of policy advice to inform reviews of model regulations and
associated materials
 leading the development of material related to high risk plant and licensing topics, and
 negotiating and liaising with external stakeholders including industry associations and other
agencies to establish evidence-based whole of government policies.
What we are looking for?
To be successful in this role, you will have:
 demonstrated experience in developing high level policy and associated material in a
complex regulatory environment
 demonstrated analytical skills including an ability to provide quality written analysis to
effectively communicate technical information
 an ability to build and maintain effective relationships with a variety of stakeholders in a
tripartite policy environment

an ability to provide a client-focused approach in the development of material for work
health and safety stakeholders
excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly for the development of policy
and communication of technical information
demonstrated experience in managing the overall performance and projects of a team of
policy staff including technical content specialists, identifying and setting objectives and
goals, developing business plans, delegating work priorities and managing section budgets
and expenditure, and
an appreciation of the APS workplace environment and governance arrangements,
particularly the APS Values and Code of Conduct.
Applicants must have appropriate senior level experience:


developing and providing policy advice to government, and
in a regulatory environment, developing policy to support the drafting and implementation
of complex legislation.
Applicants must also demonstrate an ability to quickly acquire an understanding of relevant policy
issues in areas such as the design, manufacture, or regulation of high risk plant, high risk work,
construction, transport or associated fields.

Security
This is a designated security assessed position. The successful applicant will be required to obtain
and maintain a security assessment at the Baseline Level.
Eligibility
Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be
engaged in the APS unless the Agency delegate has agreed in writing. Applicants are to indicate
their citizenship when applying.
