About the Russian Romances Concert
Russian Romances Songs Concert and Lecture (Monday, June 22)
In its fifth summer season, the Russian Opera Workshop presents a concert of Russian
Romances followed by Philadelphia’s premiere performance of Anton Rubenstein’s The
Demon (June 23-25). The artists will perform a collection of Russian romances and
songs. This performance introduces all the artists in the program. Composer Daren Hagen
will give a short lecture to introduce the opera that will be performed in the following
days. This unique performance is highly recommended for those interested in attending
performances of The Demon. All events are FREE to the public.
About the Opera In-concert
Anton Rubenstein, The Demon (Tuesday, June 23-Thursday, June 25)
In its fifth summer season, the Russian Opera Workshop presents the Philadelphia
premiere of Anton Rubenstein’s The Demon. Composed in 1871, the libretto was written
by Pavel Viskovatov and based on the poem of the same name by Mikhail Lermontov.
The Demon premiered in 1875 in St. Petersburg, and while it is often performed in
Russia, the opera is a rare event in the West. The Philadelphia premiere performance of
The Demon includes a chorus comprised of singers from the local groups: Philadelphia
Singers, Choral Arts Philadelphia and Mendelssohn Club, with Julia Zavadsky (faculty at
Rutgers University) as chorus master. All events are FREE to the public.

Romances followed by performances of Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta (July 28-30). The
artists will perform a collection of Russian romances and songs. This performance
introduces all the artists in the program. Composer Daren Hagen will give a short lecture
to introduce the opera that will be performed in the following days. This unique
performance is highly recommended for those interested in attending performances of
Iolanta. All events are FREE to the public.
About the Opera In-concert
Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky, Iolanta (Tuesday, July 28-Thursday, July 30)
In its fifth summer season, the Russian Opera Workshop presents Tchaikovsky’s final
opera, Iolanta. Composed in 1892, the libretto written by Modest Tchaikovsky was based
on the Danish play King René’s Daughter. Iolanta premiered in 1892 in St. Petersburg,
and just this season The Metropolitan Opera produced the opera for the first time in their
history. The Philadelphia performance of Iolanta includes a chorus comprised of singers
from the local groups: Philadelphia Singers, Choral Arts Philadelphia and Mendelssohn
Club, with Julia Zavadsky (faculty at Rutgers University) as the chorus master. All events
are FREE to the public.
