The Waipipi Wave Waipipi School Student Newspaper October 2011 Equine Extravaganza On the 3rd December at the Te Toro Domain Waipipi School is running a horse event for people in the community. I interviewed two students who are part of the organising committee. What is it like being part of the Equine Extravaganza team? It is fun because it is a good experience. What have you had to do as part of the organising committee? Selecting the picture used for the colouring in competition, helping decide what events should be run, painting the signs to advertise the event. This has been hard work as we have to be careful to paint between the lines. Can anyone compete on this day? Yes, if you can ride and have a horse or pony; you can compete in this event. It costs $25 for flat, jumping and games. You can win ribbons. There is also a 6 bar jumping competition being run at lunchtime which will cost an extra $10. Need some food? If you know someone that needs some food suggest they call on the Waiuku Food Bank. The Food Bank is an organisation of churches helping the community. Waipipi School has tried hard to donate food in term 3. I interviewed Amanda Salmon a member of the Food Bank. What is it like in the Food Bank? I work with a great team of people which makes the job fun. It is sad seeing people struggling, but it’s good to be able to help. How can other people help? If you want to help the Food Bank call 09 2352341. By William Salmon “Smile for the Camera” 3,2,1, Action. On the 5th and 6th of October, Waipipi school ran a production produced by Mr Cochrane. It was about 4 photographers who are out to get the best photo to win a prize and $10,000. 40 Waipipi students had an acting part in our production. Everyone else sung in the choir. This year we raised money to get curtains and wings. Our stage now looks professional. All the cast thank Mrs Johnson, Mrs Thompson and Mrs Milne for all their hard work sewing and creating our curtains, costumes and scenery. A huge thanks to Mr Cochrane who wrote and produced the play. The matinee was at 10 o’clock on Wednesday 5th October and the evening performance was at 6:30pm Thursday 6th October. What is it all about? The musical is called Rhythm and Tunes. This will be a musical production. There will be singing, rhythms (using a variety of sounds and equipment) and a variety of instruments being played. Term One’s main topic unit is music. All classes will be learning about music and will have an item in the musical. Any individual student who can play an instrument or create a rhythm may try out for a solo or duel part in the show. The musical is being written by Mrs Brown, James Hanna Batty, Hannah Gleeson and Coby Bock. The story is being written about a boy who has different taste in music from his dad and the story develops from there. More details will come out next term. By Joshua Salmon Re-surface of Bottom Court We have recently had our court measured up for an astro turf surface by a couple of companies. Astro turf is a fake grass and allows many different sports to be played on it. Eg: netball, basketball, hockey, rugby and tennis. Astro turf is very strong and is made out of polypropylene fibre backed with marine latex and filled with sand. It is hard to damage and can stand up to the weather and can be used each day of the year. Our court design will have lines for netball, tennis and basketball. The tennis court will be the blue court in the centre. Our school is fundraising to do this and we are also applying for a grant to help cover the costs of doing this re-surface. By Bailey Hair Below: our proposed court design. Reporter Visits our Newspaper Team On Thursday 15th September Emma Hyde Richards, a reporter from the Post, came and talked to the Waipipi Wave Newspaper Team. She talked to us about her most memorable moments as a reporter. One mentioned was Justin Bieber. She didn’t think much of him as he walks around thinking he is cool. Emma has also met John Key and has had her photo taken with him. She thought he was cool and down to earth. We enjoyed talking with her and asked heaps of questions. By Samantha Maxwell and Thomas Kay Beep Test Waipipi School recently held a fitness test for all students. The fitness test helps students see how fit they are at the moment. The students stop when they miss a beep or feel too tired to carry on. We were asked to set a goal to work towards in the next Beep Test. Some kids did really well with the test. Emily Longhurst Lee said she liked it as it was good to know her fitness level. Finn Hodgson liked it because it got faster at the end. Design drawn by Tiger Turf By Hannah Gleeson
