Emphasis is on gesture, correct measurement, line quality, form and cast shadows, creating volume, and placement of the form. Drawing materials include vine or hard charcoal, Conte crayon, graphite, kneadable eraser, chamois, and a 18x24 newsprint pad. Hour long poses accommodate painting for those with painting skills. Class is suitable for beginning and intermediate life drawers. . Walk-ins OK when space available--$15 session plus $2 classroom fee. Copper Art Club Wednesday, July 2 • 10 am to 1 pm Open Painting with Optional Egg-to-Head Side-View Painting Learn alignment of facial features. Turn a painting of an egg into a face. You will need a 9x12 canvas board and your usual oil painting supplies, including rags or paper towels, and Titanium White. Several filberts in large (#12), medium (#4 -6), and small (#2) are useful in this exercise. Participants will receive a free sample tube of Gamblin Chromatic Black oil paint that they may use for this study. Handouts of instructions will be available. No cost to club members-- non-members, $20. Life Drawing Thursdays, July 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 • 9:30 am to 12:30 pm Life Drawing with George Allen Durkee of Mountain Ranch Draw from a live nude model on Thursday mornings. No experience needed. Limited instruction if you want it, or George will stay out of your face if you don’t. Materials available at Town Hall Arts. You will need an 18x24 newsprint pad and drawing pencils (charcoal or graphite – 4B and/or 6B). $10 a week plus $2 classroom fee. Sign up with Larry. Oil Expressions in Oil with Diana Boyd of Sonora Tried and true right brain methods have made this oil 2 painting class fun and popular. Classes include instruction in painting from upside-down photos, right-side-up still lifes, and timed pieces, using a variety of grounds. Diana's style both on canvas and as an instructor is loose, expressive and full of spirit! Please have your own turp pot with lid and container for your brushes. $50 deposit holds your place in these popular classes! Short exercises will begin the class and then building to lengthier more challenging exercises. Minimum 4 students - max 8 students. Cost is $20 plus $2 classroom fee. 39ers Club Friday, July 11 • 1 pm to 3 pm Expressions in Watercolor with Irene Taylor of Sonora If you were born in 1939 or before, this class is completely free for you--supplies are included. This class will focus on expression of trees, water, shadows and reflections. Bring your favorite photo(s) to use as inspiration, or use Irene’s. Younger folks may take the class for $15. 3 Copper Art Club Wednesday, July 16 • 10 am to 1 pm Open Painting with “Fun with Yupo” Bring your usual watercolor supplies and have some fun on Yupo paper. Yupo is a compelling and unique alternative to traditional watercolor papers. It's a synthetic paper, machinemade in the USA of polypropylene. This extraordinary, nonabsorbent surface resists tearing and buckling and remains perfectly flat, eliminating the need for soaking, stretching, or taping. Watercolor professionals have found Yupo to be receptive to a variety of techniques. Club members will receive a 9x12 sheet to work on. Bring a photo or work from Susie’s sunflower photo. No instruction; no fee for class for club members—fee for non-member is $20. For the drawing exercise, you will use a 2B or softer pencil, Magic Rub eraser, ruler, and drawing paper. Bring a photo of a newborn if you have one. No cost for club member; $10 non-members. Acrylics Friday, July 25 • 10 am to 1 pm Acrylic Basics with Alanna McDaniel Come join us in learning the many techniques available to create your own vibrant acrylic still life painting! We will review the dynamics of a color wheel to help you make richer colors, discuss the importance of value to make your images burst with life, and explore a myriad of techniques to help personalize your paintings. Leonardo Da Vinci is noted for saying that "a great painting comes from a great drawing"; beginning at this stage, we will make a basic still life drawing for which your acrylic painting will be the icing! Our class will suit all levels of artistic experience. Supplies include 16x20 canvas panel, palette paper, as many brushes as you 4 like, including a 12, 8, 4, 2 flats, round 6, and filbert 4, all available on the 50% off Soft Grip rack. Golden Open Acrylic paints in these colors: titanium white, black, ultramarine blue, cadmium red light, cadmium yellow medium, burnt sienna, and phthalo green. Cost of class is $15 plus $2 classroom fee. Copper Art Club Wednesday, July 30 • 10 am to 1 pm Open Painting with Optional One-Drawing-A-Day #11 Warm-Up—a watercolor postcard. For the drawing exercise, you won’t need a pencil—you will be drawing with a brush! Bring any watercolor supplies you have and a photo of a local scene you would like to paint on a postcard. Postcards provided. No instruction; no cost. Watercolor Thursday and Friday, August 14, 15 • 10 am to 3 pm Celebrate the 150 years of Yosemite National Park with Martha Wallace! This class will be a study of moving water with watercolor and collage. Martha will have rice paper packets that you may purchase for $10. WATERCOLORS: Martha uses Daniel Smith watercolors, but any good quality w/c are fine. Colors are as follows: aureolin, cobalt blue, indathrone, new gamboge, organic vermillion, quinacridone pink, quinacridone sienna, rose of ultramarine, quinacridone coral, quinacridone gold, ultramarine turquoise, and ultramarine blue. BRUSHES: Martha uses good synthetic bushes. Recommended sizes: 1” and or 2” flat brush, rounds #6, #8, #12, brush, #3 rigger, #2 fan brush. PALETTE: John Pike watercolor palette or any that you may have with a large mixing area PAPER: 140 lb. Arches cold press w/c paper full sheet, 2 full sheets masa paper. Cost is $80 for workshop plus $4 classroom fee. Drawing Thursday and Friday, August 21, 22• 10 am to 3 pm Beginning and Intermediate Drawing Basics with Peggi Kroll-Roberts of Angels Camp More information to come. Mosaics Saturday August 30 • 10 am to 2 pm and Sunday, August 31 • 10 am to 11 am Stained Glass Mosaic Lighted Blocks or Stepping Stones with Kathie Peery of Copperopolis Saturday: glue pieces in place. 5 Sunday: grout stone and polish (sealer will be given to apply the following day). Kathie will provide a pattern and jars and jars of colored glass for your background. All supplies are included for this project. Kathie has been doing stained glass for ten years and has expanded into mosaics as a means to use all of the scraps from glass panels. You can never have too many stepping-stones! Class cost: $20/stepping stones or $25/glass blocks, plus $4 classroom fee. Please let Larry know by Aug. 25 which project you will be doing—block or stepping stone. 6
