Daily Lesson GAME Plan
Lesson Title: Who was this guy William Shakespeare and why was he important?
Grade Level: Grade 9

2. Students read a wide range of literature from many periods in many genres to build
an understanding of the many dimensions (e.g., philosophical, ethical, aesthetic) of
human experience.
7. Students conduct research on issues and interests by generating ideas and questions,
and posing problems. They gather, evaluate, and synthesize data from a variety
sources (e.g., print and nonprint texts, artifacts, people) to communicate their
discoveries in ways that suit their purpose and audience.
8. Students use a variety of technological and information resources (e.g., libraries,
databases, computer networks, video) to gather and synthesize information and to
create and communicate knowledge.

Instructional Objective(s): Students will research (in small groups) an aspect of William
Shakespeare’s life and times, including who he was, the Elizabethan time period, The Globe
Theatre, and the works of Shakespeare. Their goal is to present/teach the class about their
topic in the form of a presentation.
ACTION
Before-Class Preparation: Teacher will provide a list of resources and some sample
questions on the topic they will be researching. Students will also be given a list of several
valid websites from which they can begin their research. This will provide the basis for
their research and presentations.

Students will begin the activity by looking at pictures of William
Shakespeare, the Globe Theatre, and Queen Elizabeth. This is to
activate prior knowledge. Students will then be divided into
groups of 3 or 4. Each group will be given a different topic
related to William Shakespeare and Romeo and Juliet.

Using the internet and a packet with suggested topics/questions
to research, each group will work together to gather information
necessary to teach their class about their specific topic.

Using presentation software, such as PowerPoint, students will
create a presentation of their topic for the purpose for the
purpose of teaching their classmates about their topic. Once all
presentations are complete, students will have the background
knowledge needed to begin the play The Tragedy of Romeo and
Juliet by William Shakespeare.

MONITOR
Ongoing Assessment(s): Students research and collaboration will be closely monitored
for their responses and participation as they work through their WebQuest. Completed
WebQuests and corresponding presentations will be graded for completeness, accuracy,
and creativity.
Accommodations and Extensions: Students can be offered a choice of presentation
methods, and requirements (such as length) of presentation can be modified for struggling
learners.
Back-up Plan: This activity can also be completed using resources from the library that do
not involve computer use, such as books. Presentations can be made via visual aids, such
as a poster of the required materials.
EVALUATION
Lesson Reflections and Notes: Variations of this activity can be used at the beginning of
almost any unit, using different types of technology each time.
