Lesson Plans 2nd Week – September 2 - 5 Major Objectives: Organization Students will continue to learn procedures, classroom expectations, and academic goals for the school year. Students will commit to the annual goal they have set for themselves. Students will bring in school supplies and will organize their folders. Writing & Writing Mechanics Vocabulary Reading Students will identify 4 parts of speech: nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Quiz over these parts of speech Friday, September 5. Students will use commas correctly in sentences. Test over comma placement Friday, September 12. Students will identify subjects and predicates in sentences, and will write complete sentences with subjects and predicates. Test over subjects and predicates Friday, September 12. Students will work this 6 weeks on an activity called, “Out with the Old and In with the New.” They will “toss” the following overused words and will use new vocabulary to replace them: nice, saw (verb), ran, good, smart, laughed, pretty, funny, said, happy, little, walked, big, sad, and like. New words used are: kind, glimpsed, hurried, great, witty, beautiful, farcical, teeny, towering, downcast, Quiz over these words Friday, September 5. Students will preview and define the vocabulary words for our upcoming short story. These words are: affect (verb), conflict (noun), contribute (verb), disrespect (noun), generation (noun), motivation (noun), privilege (noun), and responsible (adjective). Test over these words Friday, September 12. Students will use the following reading comprehension strategy: MAKE AND CONFIRM PREDICTIONS prior to reading “The Good Samaritan.” Students will being reading “The Good Samaritan” and will understand the elements of plot. Students will understand VOICE as a trait of writing, and they will identify VOICE in a short story. Learning Activities the Week of August 25, 2014 Tuesday: Students will review vocabulary from last week. Students will commit to their annual personal goal. Students will set up their classroom folders. Students will play a game to reinforce their identification of nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. Wednesday & Thursday: Friday: Students will identify and form complete sentences using subjects and predicates. Students will work with partners to write rules regarding comma usage. Students will take notes on comma usage. Students will preview and define vocabulary words for “The Good Samaritan.” Students will listen to stories from children’s literature to understand “voice” in writing. Students will take notes on how to identify “voice” in reading and how to use “voice” in writing. Students will begin reading “The Good Samaritan” and will use a graphic organizer to aid them in understanding the parts of a plot.
