Lesson Plans 3rd Week – September 8-12 Major Objectives: Organization Students will clean their classroom folders and take home graded papers to show their parents. Writing & Writing Mechanics Vocabulary Students will use commas correctly in sentences. Test over comma placement Friday, September 12. Students will identify subjects and predicates in sentences, and will write complete sentences with subjects and predicates. Test over subjects and predicates Friday, September 12. Students will work this 6 weeks on an activity called, “Out with the Old and In with the New.” They will “toss” the following overused words and will use new vocabulary to replace them: Old Word: New Word: said replied walked strolled laughed guffawed like cherish good superb happy elated Students will preview and define the vocabulary words for our upcoming short story. These words are: affect (verb), conflict (noun), contribute (verb), disrespect (noun), generation (noun), motivation (noun), privilege (noun), and responsible (adjective). Quiz over these words Tuesday, September 16 Reading Students will use the following reading comprehension strategy: MAKE AND CONFIRM PREDICTIONS prior to reading “The Good Samaritan.” Students will begin reading “The Good Samaritan” and will understand the elements of plot. Students will understand VOICE as a trait of writing, and they will identify VOICE in a short story. Learning Activities the Week of September 8, 2014 Monday: Students will take a quiz over new vocabulary and nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Students will learn new words for the “Out with the Old and in with the New” assignment. Students will listen to “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs” to begin exploring the concept of VOICE in writing. Students will have copies of emotion cards to help them determine what they hear as I read. Tuesday Students will review subjects and predicates. Students will review comma placement in sentences. Students will listen to “Today I Feel Silly” and “Diary of a Worm” to continue exploring the concept of VOICE in writing. Students will have copies of emotion cards to help them determine what they hear as I read. Wednesday & Thursday Students will take notes on how to identify VOICE reading and how to use VOICE in writing. Students will preview and define vocabulary they will encounter in “The Good Samaritan.” Students will learn where the term “good Samaritan” comes from, and how it might be used in a story. Student will look at the pictures in the story and read about the author, and they will predict what the story might entail. Students will begin reading “The Good Samaritan” and will use a graphic organizer to aid them in understanding the parts of a plot. HOMEWORK TONIGHT Students will have a review to complete in order to prepare well for the test FRIDAY over subjects and predicate and comma placement in sentences. Friday Students will take a test over subjects and predicates, and comma placement in sentences. Students will continue reading “The Good Samaritan.” Students will play a vocabulary game to prepare for the vocabulary quiz Tuesday, September 16.
