Lesson Plans 4th Week – September 15-19 Major Objectives: Writing & Writing Mechanics Students will understand the four purposes of writing: narration, description, exposition, and persuasion. Students will answer questions in complete sentences after reading a short story, and will give text evidence to explain their answers. Vocabulary Students will work this 6 weeks on an activity called, “Out with the Old and In with the New.” They will “toss” the following overused words and will use new vocabulary to replace them: Old Word: nice saw little big walked laughed New Word: benevolent observed petite mammoth staggered chortled Students will continue to review the vocabulary words for current story – “The Good Samaritan” by Rene Saldaña, Jr. These words are: affect (verb), conflict (noun), contribute (verb), disrespect (noun), generation (noun), motivation (noun), privilege (noun), and responsible (adjective). QUIZ OVER ALL VOCABULARY—FRIDAY 9/19/14. Students will learn what an idiom is, and will understand the following idioms from our short story: dangling the carrot in front of our eyes (getting us to work by promising a reward) kept his word (did what he had promised) I’d be off the hook. (No one could blame me) Reading Students will use the following reading comprehension strategy: MAKE AND CONFIRM PREDICTIONS prior to reading “The Good Samaritan.” Students will begin reading “The Good Samaritan” and will understand the elements of plot. Learning Activities the Week of September 15 , 2014 Monday: Students will read about author Rene Saldaña prior to reading “The Good Samaritan.” Students will: Tuesday: predict what is going to happen in the story. state three things to look for at the beginning of predicting (author, title, picture). change their predictions as they read the story. explain why using predictions is a good reading strategy. Students will begin reading “The Good Samaritan.” Wednesday/ Thursday: Students will continue reading “The Good Samaritan.” Students will review vocabulary for quiz Friday. Students will review their predictions and make changes if necessary. Friday: VOCABULARY QUIZ Students will continue/finish “The Good Samaritan.” Students will work on comprehension questions and activities: a. What does Rey do when Mr. Sanchez needs help at the end of the story? Were you surprised by Rey’s response? Explain. b. Students will complete a story map on “The Good Samaritan,” identifying the exposition (beginning), rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution (ending) c. How does Rey’s father affect Rey’s decision to help Mr. Sanchez? Find two examples that support your answer.
