SAMPLE REQUEST FORM
U.S. investigators submitting proposals requiring ice from the South Pole ice core must contact the South Pole ice
iore - Science Coordination Office (SCO) prior to submitting. The South Pole SCO will provide a letter for inclusion
with the proposals, assessing whether the ice core request is consistent with the South Pole ice core operation plan.
To initiate the process, investigators should submit this Sample Request Form to the SCO.
If the SCO approves your Sample Request, the SCO will provide you with a Letter of Support stating that your
proposal is consistent with the South Pole ice core operation plan. ** The Letter of Support needs to be submitted
with your NSF proposal. **
Email the completed Sample Request Form to the following:
contact@spicecore.org
** Please fill out to the best of your ability **

Science Objectives:
Please BRIEFLY describe your science objectives AND the science justification for why South Pole ice is necessary to meet
these objectives
Sampling in the Field:
If you require sampling in the field on the core please describe how, when this will be performed
Describe the samples you are requesting:
Example: Size, volume, shape, sample frequency (depth or time), time or depth interval, specific event, amount of flexibility
with regards to sample depth and sample shape, constraints on location with the core cross section
Is this a continuous sample down the entire length of the ice core, or is this a non-continuous sample?
Continuous
Non-continuous
Describe how this sample might change typical processing at NICL: (only applicable to special requirements)
Example: What equipment is needed, required ice surface preparation, how long will it take to sample, how many people, how
much space in the exam room, how much electrical power, internet access, how will the ice be moved around in the exam
room, how will the samples be packed, how long will they be stored at NICL, how will they be sent to your lab, any special
concerns about contamination or sampling procedure, what chemicals will be used.
Describe everything you will measure on the sample:
