Qualifier course aims: English for Social & Community Purposes (ESCP) To develop students’ English language and cultural skills to enable them to communicate with developing independence and fluency in a range of everyday social and community contexts OR English for Academic Purposes (EAP) To develop students’ language skills so that they can communicate independently and effectively in familiar and some less familiar situations with fluency and flexibility in academic English language contexts. 4 Textbooks You will need one of the following books: For English for Academic Purposes (EAP): Oxford EAP. A course for English for Academic Purposes. Upper Intermediate / B2 Student’s Book by Edward de Chazal & Sam McCarter. Oxford University Press, 2012. For ESCP: English Unlimited Upper Intermediate Coursebook (with Online Workbook) by Tilbury, Hendra & Ackroyd , Cambridge University Press 2011 Important: it is against the copyright law to photocopy more than 10% of a book. This means that you are NOT allowed to copy the WHOLE book. Also, if you don’t buy the book, you cannot get access to the online workbook, which is assessed. Stationery You will need to buy: A folder and dividers Pens, pencils and a highlighter Lined A4 refill paper A USB stick / flashdrive Resources You will be given worksheets in class as well as working online both in class and at home. ESCP classes will have access to an online English-English dictionary on the DVD that comes with your coursebook and online Self Study pack. Students should read newspapers, magazines (eg. Password), books and readers in the Language Learning Centre (LLC) and from the library. There are audiotapes, videos, DVDs, grammar books, pronunciation books and other resources there to help you improve your English. 5 COURSE WORK/SELF-DIRECTED STUDY Course work: You will be given regular course work tasks and homework, including the online workbook for ESCP and an e-portfolio for both ESCP and EAP. Self-directed study (16+ hours per week): Online EAP: Use your Course book DVD-ROM: for lecture review and practice Use Google-sites for your e-Portfolio: - to complete reading, writing, listening and speaking tasks ESCP: Use your Course book DVD-Rom - for word lists and to practice with word cards. - to assess what you can do. - to store and find work you have done. Use your Online Workbook: - to practice reading, writing, listening, vocabulary and grammar skills. - for quick check tests. - to keep a record of your work and your marks. Use language learning programmes on the computers at Unitec (these cannot be used at home). Use the ESL websites and YouTube clips Language Learning Centre/Library • Readers, magazines, Password magazine – read as much as possible • Listen to recorded books and videos Outside class – practise speaking with New Zealanders, listen to the radio and watch TV Be curious – learn about the people, customs and environment around you. Ask questions. 6 STUDENT’S TIME COMMITMENT/ATTENDANCE Student’s Time Commitment Core 8 hours in class each week PLUS 8 hours of homework/self-directed learning Qualifier (EAP/ ESCP) 8 hours in class in each week PLUS 8 hours of homework/self-directed learning Attendance It is a condition of Student Visas that International students attend 100% of course sessions. A signed medical certificate is required to explain any absences. Attendance is monitored by e-registers and unauthorised absence communicated to Unitec International. 100% attendance is strongly recommended to all students and attendance is monitored via e-registers. You will also be marked “absent” if you are late and you miss more than 15 minutes of a class or you leave more than 15 minutes early. 7 SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT DATES & SCHEDULES Information for e-Portfolio 2015 Oral & Text course An e-Portfolio is a collection of pieces of work in all 4 skills (Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking). You will be asked to do 4 different tasks for each skill, which means 16 tasks in total. These are done in the Workspace of a Google site. Your teacher will give you all the information you need about this. This e-Portfolio is 100% of your Oral and Text course, is worth 30 credits.
