Mission H2O (987) 654-3210 missionh2o@gmail.com FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 9, 2013 Lake Forest, Michigan FAMILY FARM THREATENED BY NITRATE POLLUTION The Johnson family of Rivertown is very concerned over talk of an expansion of the Company, Poly Chemical (PC). Their worries are due to an incident that recently occurred on their family farm in which nitrate contamination of their irrigation system nearly ruined an entire season of crops. Additionally, the pollution posed the risk of causing serious health threats to their farm animals as well as family members. Though this incident was not directly caused by PC, their release of nitrates and other chemicals put the Johnsons and other families at risk for similar situations to take place. The intensive two-phase expansion that PC wishes to perform would triple their current plant size. Intentions of this expansion include an increased production of the company’s own pharmaceutical drugs and potentially the purchase of chemical wastes from their sister companies. PC would reuse and resell these chemical wastes until they could no longer be reused, in which case they would then be disposed. We, at Mission H2O, worked alongside the Johnson family to remove the pollution through a water treatment system. Our process diluted the nitrate polluted water by blending the polluted water with another source, with low nitrate concentrations. Blending the two waters produced water that is low in nitrate concentration. Donations from our loyal supporters made this all possible. “Mission H2O has shown their sheer commitment to water protection, and in our case, specifically their concern for the health and safety of my family, our farm animals, and our crops as affected by the water pollution. - Karen Johnson Poly Chemical’s “Green” industry process produces a large amount of nitrates which are used in fertilizers; a leading cause of pollution? According to the EPA, short term inhalation of the chemical, Dioxane has been found to cause vertigo, drowsiness, headaches, anorexia, and irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs in humans Even the smallest amounts of Triclosan, found in by-products of Poly Chemical, have been proven to cause harmful effects of the thyroids of bullfrogs as well as humans Due to these chemical risks, we at Mission H20 are unconditionally opposed to an expansion by Poly Chemical Pharmaceutical Company ### Mission H2O is a nonprofit organization focused on protecting the health and overall quality of freshwater resources located in and around the Great Lakes Region.
