Essential Question:
Could you have a compound
made of mixtures?
Could you have a mixture
made of compounds?
Vocabulary:
a. Must Know Vocabulary- These words are exactly what
they say they are, must know vocabulary. These words must
be learned and need to be used. Each of these words will need
to be included in your Science Encyclopedia on vocabulary
sheets.
b. Other Helpful Vocabulary- You are not required to place
these words in your science encyclopedia, but it wouldn’t be a
bad idea. These are words that you will be hearing often, but
they are not the major vocabulary words of the unit.
Must Know Vocabulary:
(Need to complete Vocabulary Sheets with these words)
1. Mixture
2. Compound
3. Element
4. Solution
5. Solubility
6. Physical Change
(Solute and Solvent)
7. Chemical Change
Good To know Vocabulary:
Pure Substance
Saturated
Suspension
Colloid

Note on Research:
During this unit we will start transitioning to actually
researching like a scientist. In the real world there are not
neatly set up notes pages with readings directly in front of, or
following the notes page for scientists to use. They need to
go out, find information, evaluate it and then use it if it meets
their needs/ standards.
But, since we are 7th graders, this will be a transition packet.
A set of readings from the text book will be attached at the
end of the packet, but the readings will be in the order they
appear in the textbook and not necessarily in the order of
your notes pages. When we begin our next major unit, there
will be no accompanying readings at all. How exciting!
Pure Substances Research: (_____________)
We call pure substances what?
- we have already completed research on pure substances. They are
called ____________
We call pure substances what?
- Below write some general information about _____________
- Explanation of how ___________ can go through phase change
Sources:
Compounds and Chemical Change/ Reactions
Research
Your notes need to include research on the following information:
-What is made during a chemical change
- Some common Compounds
- How you know a chemical change has
- 2 examples of different compounds
happened. Could be called “indicators of
changing state
chemical change/ chemical reaction”

Mixtures: Suspensions, Colloids and Solutions
Research
For suspensions, colloids and solutions you are responsible for basic
information about each term and some real-life examples. Be sure your
research includes all the topics listed below:
- Physical Change
Types of Mixtures (a-c)
a. Solutions
- Solubility
- Solutes and Solvents
- Factors affecting
solubility
- Separation of mixtures
and why they can be
separated
b. Suspensions
List sources under/ next to/ somewhere in each section
c. *Colloids*
