Leading for the Common Good – At Bowdoin and Beyond

Application Deadline: Monday, February 2, 12:00 p.m.

Program Dates – Tuesdays from 7:00-8:30 p.m., February 10-April 14, 2015

Overview

The Leading for the Common Good series provides students with the opportunity to meet regularly with peers to learn about service and leadership at Bowdoin, as well as the many ways to stay involved with the common good beyond Bowdoin. A leadership development opportunity and a space to think about life beyond Bowdoin, this seminar is open to students from any class year. Led by McKeen Center Director

Sarah Seames and McKeen Fellow Mariely Garcia ’17, this small group will have eight meetings, which will include discussions with alumni and community members involved in work related to the common good, a group service project, facilitated reflection, and opportunities to think about how service, leadership, and the common good intersect.

Speakers and activities will include:

 George Khaldun ’73 – Mr. Khaldun is a member of Bowdoin’s Board of Trustees and the Chief

Administrative Officer of Harlem Children’s Zone, a nationally recognized organization that has as its goal to give “kids the individualized support they need to get to and through college and become productive, self-sustaining adults.”

George Khaldun’s talk will take place on Friday, February 6 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. This is not the regular meeting time for this group but is required of participants unless they have an academic or employment conflict.

 Jon Behar ’01 and the Giving Games – A program of The Life You Can Save, the Giving Game is an activity that Mr. Behar will run for us which teaches about philanthropy and the ways to give most effectively. Participants will think about their own personal criteria for giving and learn how to channel their own future donations to where they will do the most good.

 Group Service Project – On Saturday, February 21, participants will take part in a group service project at a local Brunswick organization. The day will also include group discussions on how to design and lead meaningful service opportunities, create reciprocal partnerships, and facilitate educational reflection activities.

 Other speakers are still being scheduled and will include alumni and community members who will share their experiences in government, nonprofit leadership, social entrepreneurship, and/or other topics related to the pursuit of the common good.
