ACADEMIC ADVISING APPOINTMENTS & CHOOSING CLASSES
If you have not decided upon a major:





Look through the online course schedule and mark the courses that look interesting.
Pick several extra courses in case any that you want are unavailable.
Using the courses you’ve picked and the courses you know you’ll need (e.g. English and math), put
together a draft schedule using the course planner sheets available at the Student Affairs office.
If you desire assistance with career counseling, set up an additional appointment for this purpose.
Bring all your materials with you to your appointment.
If you have decided upon a major:






If you don’t know which school offers your major, visit the University of Wisconsin HELP website at
http://www.uwhelp.wisconsin.edu/ to find help you with the process.
Under “Programs and Majors” on the HELP website, look at the catalogs of the schools that offer your
major.
See what courses would be required for your major. You will find that many of these requirements are
similar across the UW System.
Print any useful information to bring with you to your advising appointment. If you can’t print out this
information, at least record the web address.
Course numbers are not the same across the University of Wisconsin System. If you want to know the
direct equivalencies between UW-Rock County and your planned transfer school, visit the Transfer
Information System at http://tis.uwsa.edu/. If you find this confusing, your advisor can assist you.
Follow the directions for undecided majors above, adding in the courses that you believe you will need.
(Be aware, however, that your advisor may have information about programs that is unavailable online.)
If you need financial aid advising:





File your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) early. If you have questions, call 1-8004FEDAID. Student Affairs cannot help you fill out your FAFSA, though periodic workshops may be
offered.
Read carefully any information that you receive. Sometimes the answer you seek becomes apparent
with close reading.
After you have received your Student Aid Report (SAR) all questions should be directed to Student
Affairs.
Bring all documentation or information requests to your advising session.
Remember that the responsibility of paying for your education rests with you. Have a budget and a plan
for how you will pay for school.
Remember:




Your advisor is here to help you learn how to navigate the system.
Go as far as you can on your own, then you can check your work with your advisor.
Be timely. Problems can occur if you wait until too late to register for classes, apply for financial aid or
apply for transfer admission.
Keep all your papers, receipts, letters, syllabi, and documents. You never know when you’ll need them.
