Displays
The Gallery’s changing programme of free displays
highlight a range of themes, sitters and artists, as
well as significant anniversaries and acquisitions.
Simon Schama’s Face of Britain
Across the Gallery, until 4 January 2016
Historian Simon Schama has joined with National
Portrait Gallery curators to take a fresh look at the
Collection and present an exploration of the history of
Britain through portraiture. Focusing on the themes of
Power, Love, Fame, Self and People, he asks what
makes a successful portrait and what this tells us about
the individual and collective psyche of the times. The
display is accompanied by a five-part BBC series and
there is an associated book published by Viking Penguin
which is available from Gallery Shops.
Van Dyck: Transforming British Art
Floor 2 Room 5, until 3 January 2016
Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599 – 1641) was the most
influential portrait painter ever to work in Britain. This
display places the Gallery’s recently acquired selfportrait of Van Dyck alongside other paintings by the
artist and his studio and portraits by his contemporaries.
As well as works from the Gallery’s own Collection, it
includes two rarely seen and important portraits of
Charles I and Henrietta Maria from Chequers.
Organised with support from the Art Fund and the
Heritage Lottery Fund
Exposed: The Naked Portrait
Floor 2 Room 16, from 9 January 2016
The naked human figure has been a preoccupation of
art from prehistory to the present day. This cross-period
display of unclothed portraits from the Collection raises
questions about identity and gender, the real and ideal.
It includes portraits ranging from the flirtatious royal
mistress Nell Gwyn to the interrogation of nudity by
contemporary artists.
Public and Private: Winston Churchill in Photographs
Floor 1 Room 31, until 1 June 2016
To coincide with the 50th anniversary of the death of
Winston Churchill in 2015, this display gives a broad
picture of Churchill’s many roles through iconic wartime
portraits such as those by Cecil Beaton and Yousuf
Karsh and press prints, tear sheets and snapshots
which show him as a correspondent, soldier, painter,
writer and family man.
