Plate Tectonics Time Line
_____ / 40 Classwork Points
Create a timeline (either high tech or low tech) that includes 20 major events in the
development of the theories of plate tectonics and continental drift.
 Use the 10 events (they are not in order) below
 Find 10 events of your own. Examples can be major discoveries of boundaries,
technological advancements, etc.
 Each event needs the date and one short sentences about it (2 points per event)
 If you use the internet please provide a list of websites (you can shorten the url)
Due first thing Monday (11/9/15) – you will class time to work Wednesday and Thursday.
Mandatory Events to Include:
o The year Alfred Wegener died in Greenland collecting data for the theory of continental
drift
o The year Tuzo Wilson added the idea of transform faults to the model of seafloor
spreading
o The year Alfred Wegener published his book The Origin of Continents and Oceans
o The approximate year the collision of the Amurian and Philippine plate started to form
Japan
o The approximate year(s) that seismologists were beginning to identify several
prominent earthquake zones parallel to the trenches called Benioff zones
o The approximate year that Pangea broke apart
o The year the first time the evidence of magnetic polar wander was used to support the
movements of continents was published by Keith Runcorn
o Approximately when the Indo-Australian plate and Eurasian plate collided to form the
Himalayas
o The year the existence of the mid-atlantic ridge was confirmed by the vessel Atlantis
o The year Robert R. Coats of the USGS described the main features of an island arc
created from subduction in the Aleutian Islands
