Roles and Responsibilities of the Dean (Academic)
1. Purpose and Objectives
The purpose of this policy is to articulate the role and responsibilities of the Academic Dean at The
Multifaith Academy.
2. Policy Statement
The Dean (Academic) reports as Dean of the Faculty to the Governing Board, maintaining regular and
ongoing communication with the trainers and Executive in relation to teaching and learning and student
administration issues.
3. Key Responsibilities
The Dean (Academic) is responsible for:
 Strategic oversight of all matters relating to teaching and learning;
 Academic administration; and
 Coordination of student administration in the faculty.
The Dean (Academic) is also required to:
 Articulate and implement appropriate strategic priorities for the near and medium term; and
 review these priorities at the annual performance appraisal discussions.
Specific responsibilities within the broad area of the role of Dean (Academic) are listed below.
4.1 Policy and leadership







Advise the Executive and Board on all faculty matters related to teaching and learning;
Chair the Faculty Board of Studies and take a leadership role in the development and review
of the faculty’s programs;
Chair the Faculty Teaching and Learning endeavours;
Represent the faculty on appropriate professional committees;
Manage the faculty’s interactions with other institutes in relation to teaching and learning
issues;
Develop the teaching and learning component of the Operational Plan; and
Develop and implement the Faculty Teaching and Learning strategies and monitor progress
towards stated performance targets.
4.2 Teaching and learning enhancement











Oversee the ongoing review and management of the Academy’s educational programs;
Oversee development, enhancement and evaluation of new and existing programs;
Develop strategies to promote the interfaith focus of the Academy’s programs;
Develop and implement strategies to deal with academic integrity issues across training and
learning activities;
Develop, implement and oversee strategies to enhance the student experience;
Develop risk management policies and procedures in relation to teaching and learning;
Advise the Executive and Board on the distribution of the faculty’s teaching budget;
identify opportunities to enhance the teaching and research nexus;
liaise with major Sponsors and stakeholders about funding for scholarships;
Chair the Scholarships Awarding Committees; and
ensure courses meet stakeholders’ expectations for ministry.
4.3 Teaching innovation and staff development


Develop and support strategies for teaching innovation and applied scholarship;
develop mechanisms to promote trainer development in the areas of teaching and learning

identify and support prospective candidates;
coordinate faculty events during the Academy’s academic terms
take the lead in Graduation planning and conducting the Graduation event; and
sign Graduation certificates and Diplomas in the name of the Academy.
4.4 Academic management of student administration





Exercise authority in relation to student related issues such as admissions, withdrawal, credit
arrangements, special and supplementary assessments, exclusions, appeals and graduations;
Oversee student administration and academic advice arrangements in the faculty; and
In consultation with the faculty’s Executive, establish appropriate procedures to ensure the
efficient and professional management of student matters such as welfare
Ensure training venues are sufficiently secure, insured and conform to WHS standards
Book venues and engage guest lecturers and speakers as necessary.
4.5 Human resources management


Assist the Executive in the management of human resource issues, including the recruitment
and selection of staff, staff performance appraisal, performance management issues and staff
grievances; and
Assist the Executive as required to ensure the development of staff within the faculty.
4.6 External relations
Assist the Executive to:
 Maintain effective links with government departments, authorities, business, commerce and
industry organisations relevant to the Academy's teaching and learning activities;
 Maintain links with sponsors and stakeholders; and
 Set up and maintain productive links with prospective students.
