PEMBROKE COLLEGE, OXFORD FIXED TERM ROKOS CAREER DEVELOPMENT FELLOWSHIP IN ECONOMICS Further Particulars Pembroke College invites applications for a Rokos Career Development Fellowship in Economics or Economic History. This is a fixed term appointment for three years, with the possibility of renewal for a further two years subject to satisfactory performance. The post is intended to provide a carefully structured period of preparation for those embarking on an academic career, and to promote equality of opportunity by helping to create a more diverse pool of potential candidates for future academic posts at Oxford or elsewhere. The Economics community at Pembroke is large and diverse, comprising 65 undergraduates reading History and Economics, Economics and Management, and Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE), with around 20 graduates on programmes in Economics, Economic History, Development, and Financial Economics, as well as a Junior Research Fellow. Academic staff include a Fellow in Economics supported by three stipendiary lecturers. A second Tutorial Fellow in Economics will be appointed jointly with the Department of International Development to start in 2016-17. In addition to supporting outstanding early-career researchers in establishing themselves, the Fellowship aims to build an academic community of shared interests in the College. Accordingly, while the field of specialisation is open, there is strong preference for proposals that complement the interests of the Fellow in Economics, Dr. Brian A’Hearn. These include (the history of) economic geography and the economy of cities, technical change and economic growth, the labour market, human capital, institutions, and living standards. Duties of the post: One of the key aims of this post is to provide supported experience in a wide range of academic duties in preparation for a career in academia. The Fellowship therefore involves elements of teaching and administrative duties, as well as research. Research: The CDF should engage in advanced study or research in collaboration with the Fellow in Economics, Dr. Brian A’Hearn. College Teaching: The CDF will assist in teaching Economics to undergraduates reading the joint degrees of PPE, Economics and Management, and History and Economics. Pembroke takes seven students a year in PPE, eight in Economics and Management and two in History and Economics. The appointee will undertake four hours of Economics teaching per week in tutorials, in each of Oxford’s three eightweek terms. University Teaching: The CDF will be encouraged to undertake University lecturing at undergraduate and postgraduate level in the most relevant department, depending on background and research interests, to help build up a portfolio of teaching expertise. The CDF should have the ability to teach first year and second year papers in Economics. Ability to teach one or more of the third year optional papers may be an advantage. A list of Economics papers is available at http://www.economics.ox.ac.uk/index.php/undergraduate/undergraduate-matrix College administration: The CDF will be required to assess and interview in the annual admissions exercise for the selection of new undergraduates, submit student reports at the end of each term via OxCORT, set and mark Collections (internal College examinations), and co-ordinate Economics teaching in the College with other tutors. S/he will share pastoral and organisational responsibility for undergraduate students in Economics, and act as College Adviser for graduate students in relevant subjects, S/he may participate in Widening Participation and Access events throughout the year. Selection criteria 1. Candidates must normally have received the degree of PhD or equivalent by 1st October 2015, and should not normally have completed a PhD or equivalent earlier than 1 October 2010 (with the exception of career breaks, e.g. for maternity / paternity leave). 2. A high level of academic achievement, appropriate to the stage of the candidate’s career, with evidence of, and potential for, producing distinguished research in economics or economic history. 3. The ability, or the potential, to provide excellent tutorial and small group teaching in a range of undergraduate topics. Experience of teaching would be an advantage. 4. An understanding of the learning needs of high achieving undergraduate students and a commitment to supporting and inspiring academic excellence in all students. 5. The organisational skills and motivation to undertake College administration, including setting and marking examinations. 6. Excellent communication and presentation skills and the sensitivity to deal with pastoral issues. Professional and career development 1. The post will provide a carefully structured and mentored work and training opportunity for an exceptional candidate embarking on an academic career in economics or economic history, and is intended to promote equality of opportunity by helping to create a more diverse pool of potential candidates for future academic posts at Oxford or elsewhere. 2. The CDF will work with the Fellow in Economics who will act as a mentor to provide advice and guidance to the post-holder on lecturing skills, on tutorial teaching, and on relevant College and Departmental practices. The mentor will also be in a position to provide advice to the Fellow at the stage when she or he is applying for permanent academic posts. 3. The CDF will be offered a carefully tailored package of professional development. Soon after taking up the appointment, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to meet with a professional development adviser from the University's Oxford Learning Institute, which has a well-developed programme of courses for academic and research staff. The CDF will also be expected to undertake the University's Developing Academic Practice programme (see www.learning.ox.ac.uk). 4. The CDF will also have access to career development advice from the University Careers Service, including one-to-one sessions with a Careers Adviser specialising in the career needs of academic and research staff, career planning and interview skills workshops, and access to information resources. Pay and benefits 1. The CDF will be appointed on Grade 7 of the Oxford salary scale, from point 3 to point 6 (currently £32,277 to £35,256 per annum), and will have the option of becoming or remaining a member of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS). 2. College Benefits: The CDF will have access to the facilities of Broadgates Hall (the College Senior Common Room) and will be entitled to full dining rights at the College. They will be provided with a shared room in College. 3. The CDF will be entitled to a research allowance of £757.50 per annum. 4. The College follows University guidelines for maternity leave. 5. The University has three subsidised nurseries and also subsidises places at some local nurseries, although at present there is a waiting list. Terms and conditions 1. This is a fixed-term post for the period 1 September 2015 to 31 August 2018 in the first instance with the possibility of renewal of two years subject to satisfactory performance. 2. The CDF will be entitled to membership of Congregation, the University's ultimate governing body. 3. Appointment will also be subject to provision of proof of the right to work in the UK.
