Counselor’s Corner Welcome back to Park Lakes Elementary! We are very happy to have our students back on campus. As the school counselors, our goal is for your child to have a happy and successful experience here at Park Lakes. Here is a glance at the Humble ISD Elementary Counselors Role at Park Lakes: Individual Concerns - Sometimes student have concerns that are interfering with the ability for them to focus in the classroom. We take referrals from students, parents, teachers, and staff. Students know that they can talk to me to discuss possible solutions confidentially that will help them overcome difficulties. References for private therapists are also available if the situation requires more intensive one-on-one attention. Classroom Guidance - Our district is currently focusing on helping all students acquire the Great 8 skills in order to help them succeed academically, socially, personally and one day, professionally. These Great 8 skills are: Optimistic Thinking, Self Awareness, Social Awareness, Self Management, Relationship Skills, Goal Directed Behavior, Personal Responsibility and Decision Making. Future Counselor Corner articles will further detail these critical life skills. Furthermore, additional guidance can be provided to classrooms or grade levels throughout the year as needed. Small Groups - These groups will center further development of the Great 8 skills. Our school will be utilizing a universal screener to alert us to students who may need further support in developing and putting into practice these crucial life skills. The groups will consist of 5- 6 students of approximately the same age. They are implemented on an as needed basis and parents will be contacted prior to the first group meeting to seek permission and answer any questions or concerns. Response to Intervention (RtI) – As counselors, we serve on the RTI Behavior Team. This is a tiered process that works to address specific areas of behavior that need improvement. If your student is struggling behaviorally, the teacher will try some of her/his best practices to address the concern. If that is unsuccessful, the teacher will meet with our team to discuss changes to the plan. If those are still unsuccessful, an RtI committee will meet with a district behavior facilitator will meet to discuss more intense interventions to support your student. The sole purpose of this process is to determine an intervention to make every child successful. Parents are part of this process, too! There are many additional roles that we fill at Park Lakes, but our primary focus is helping all children succeed both academically and socially. We are here to answer any questions or concerns that you may have. Please feel free to contact us this school year.
