STUDENT FRIENDLY COURSE DESCRIPTIONS – FRENCH AND INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGES FRENCH Core French, Grade 9 – applied FSF 1P This course is designed to enable students to continue to communicate in French. Students will use simple language to further develop their speaking, reading and comprehension skills. In addition to studying grammar concepts, students will also explore cultural aspects of Frenchspeaking countries such as regular past-times, food, music and art. The course is comprised of four units of study pertaining to the life of a teenager. Themes such as friends, food, music and sports will be highlighted throughout the course. Students will produce end-of-unit projects including role plays, dialogues, preparation and presentation of a recipe, a radio advertisement and the creation and presentation of a future sport. Prerequisite: Minimum of 600 hours of French instruction Core French, Grade 9 - academic FSF 1D This course focuses on the development of oral communication, written communication and writing skills. Through the use of short stories, articles and poems students will further develop and apply their knowledge of French themes, social trends and careers. There are four units in this course. Each unit will have a final task and a unit test. Unit 1: Final Evaluation- Creation of an imaginary website about yourself. Unit 2: Final Evaluation- Creation of a mystery game. Unit 3: Final Evaluation- Creation of a monster movie trailer with a promotional poster. Unit 4: Final Evaluation- A report concerning a current scientific issue or problem. Prerequisite: Minimum of 600 hours of French instruction or equivalent Core French, Grade 10 – applied FSF 2P Students will explore a variety of themes such as careers, positive self- imaging, laughter, world politics, and urban legends. As well, grammar will be introduced in a practical way so that students will be able to see its practical application in dialogues and readings. The entire focus of the course will be to get students to express themselves in an active and creative way in another language in a non-threatening environment. Learning French is fun!!! Final assessments will cover a broad spectrum of skills- reading writing, listening, and speaking so that student success is assured. We will be using technology to enhance learning and to provide more creative ways for all students to complete assignments. The final exam will take place in stages so that students will never feel overwhelmed. Prerequisite: Core French, Grade 9, Academic or Applied (FSF 1D or FSF 1P) Core French , Grade 10 – academic FSF 2D Students will explore a variety of genres of literature including poetry, essays, and short stories on a variety of themes- the galaxy, the interaction between brothers and sisters, the conservation of animals, and the history of the calendar. Literature will be a vehicle by which grammar concepts will be taught so that students will be more aware of its practical usage. The focus will be on students expressing themselves in an active, creative, and challenging way!!! Final assessments will cover a broad spectrum of skills- reading writing, listening, and speaking so that student success is assured. Prerequisite: Core French, Grade 9, Academic or Applied (FSF 1D or FSF 1P) Core French, Grade 11 – University Preparation FSF 3U In this inspiring course, students will examine a variety of literary genres- music, novels, plays, short stories, and films. They will be challenged with written assignments in the form of critiques, précis, and a formal research essay, emphasizing the correct use of grammar and language conventions throughout. Oral communication in French only will be a necessary ingredient for success and students’ abilities should be enhanced as a result! Prerequisite: Core French, Grade 10, Academic SPANISH Introduction to Spanish, Grade 10 – Academic LWS BO This course is designed to enable students to begin to communicate in Spanish. Students will use simple language to develop their speaking, reading and comprehension skills. Throughout the course, students will explore cultural aspects of Spanish-speaking countries including its history, traditions, art, music, holidays, architecture and pastimes. The course is comprised of four units of study highlighting Spanish speaking countries such as the United States of America, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Spain. Throughout the course, students will produce end-of-unit projects including role plays, dialogues, a research project on a Spanish speaking country, preparation of a traditional dish, creation of a traditional Chilean painting and of a Huichol yarn painting. Prerequisite: None Spanish, Grade 11 – University Preparation LWS CU This course builds upon the language learning completed in Grade 10 Introduction to Spanish course. It will allow students to communicate in Spanish while continuing to develop their listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. Students will continue to explore cultural aspects of Spanish speaking countries. By the end of this course, students should feel confident in speaking with a native speaker and understanding spoken and written text. The course is comprised of four units of study highlighting Spanish speaking countries such as Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Argentina and Costa Rica. Throughout the course, students will produce end-of-unit projects including role plays, dialogues, a comparative analysis of cultural festivities of Spanish speaking countries, design and creation of an Ecuadorian tapestry and a research project of a famous Spanish speaking athlete.
