DEBATE CLUB
In Debate Club, students
in grades 6-8 explore
topical issues by researching both sides of an
“argument” and presenting one side of this
argument in a debate - with logic, evidence
and passion - to persuade other club
members that their side is right. We use
Public Forum debate. Here is a link to Public
Forum Debate format:
https://debate.uvm.edu/dcpdf/PFNFL.pdf
Students research a topic, discuss salient
points, formulate an argument and conduct
the formal debate. Students debate other
club members at Maple Point. In the Spring
each year, students participate in the
Neshaminy Middle Schools District Debate
Competition where club members from the
three middle school come together to square
off in a 3-round competition. The Debate Club
is a fun and thought-provoking club open to
all interested students. While increasing
social awareness of current topics, club
members also learn leadership skills,
collaboration skills, presentation skills,
listening, logic, and research and writing
skills. Students can move on to the high
school debate club. Being a Debate Club
member is a pathway to future opportunity in
high school, college in the workforce and in
life! Open to all interested members; skills
can be learned or honed! Debate Club will
meet on Tuesdays after school in room B207.

24 CLUB
If you are in grades 5-8 and are
looking for a challenge "24
Club" may be for you! "24" is a
fast paced, problem solving/computation
competition where students race to see who
can correctly combine four numbers to get a
solution of 24. Sound easy? You may be
surprised how challenging it is! 24 Club will
meet every other Tuesday after school in room
B220 with Mrs. Merchiore and Mrs.
Curley. The first meeting will be on October
27th. Club members will compete to be eligible
to participate in a county wide "24 Challenge"
tournament in May.
HOMEWORK CLUB
Homework Club meets on
Tuesday and Thursday after
school. Students in grades 5-8
quietly work on any homework assignments.
Mrs. Schenkel and Dr. Wilson are available to
help students with work if they need
assistance. We have a few extra textbooks
along with an assortment of school supplies
just in case students need to borrow.
READING OLYMPICS
Reading Olympics inspires kids
in grades 5-8 to enjoy reading
and become lifelong readers.
Teams will be formed by grade level. Each team
consists of 8 to 16 students who agree to read
from a list of 45 books. The culminating event is a
county-wide "Celebration of Reading"
competition held in the Spring. At this event the
Maple Point teams compete against other Bucks
county schools. No team is eliminated! Every
team member earns a ribbon based on the
number of points earned. For students in grades
5-6, teams will meet after school on Tuesdays or
Wednesdays in room C232 with Mrs. Crooks.
Students in grades 7-8 will meet at various times
during the day with Mrs. Kearns.
SEWING AND CRAFTS CLUB
The Sewing and Crafts Club will
meet in C239 every other
Wednesday after school. In this club, 7th and
8th graders will make hand-made items to be
used as service projects benefiting
organizations such as the Quilts for Kids
Organization and making gifts for veterans.
Mrs. Emrich and Mrs. Gaul are the advisors.
COMPUTER SCIENCE CLUB
In Computer Science Club,
students in grades 6-8 will
learn computer science by
learning how computers
work and how to program them to do specific
tasks and to even make games. By exploring
the “what” and the “how” behind computers
and programming, students will be much more
motivated to expand their problem solving
skills, work more openly with their peers, and
develop deeper critical thinking skills.
Programming languages learned will be based
on student interests and current trends in
education. Guest speakers will be invited to
the club in areas of student interest as well.
We meet every Thursday after school in room
E203. Ms. Taylor is the advisor.
