The College of Arts and Sciences is the University’s largest academic unit and is central to its mission. The Dean is responsible for the general education curriculum for all first and second year undergraduate students, as well as approximately 75% of the junior/senior majors. With more than 40 academic departments and interdisciplinary curricula, as well as more than 30 centers, institutes, and other programs, the College is divided into four divisions: Fine Arts;
Humanities; Natural Sciences and Mathematics; and Social Sciences. The Dean will report to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost and will oversee a College with nearly 19,000 students (bachelors, masters, and Ph.D.), 1,000 faculty (80% of whom are tenured/tenuretrack), and an operating budget of $285 million.
The Dean will provide leadership in defining and communicating the College’s strategic goals. The Dean will promote a robust scholarship and research agenda, and will foster excellence and innovation in undergraduate and graduate education. The Dean will recruit and retain the best faculty, enhance their career development and empower them to participate in governance. The Dean plays a key role in fundraising. The College has an endowment of $523 million, with $40-$50 million raised each year. College faculty annual research expenditures total $108 million.
Interested candidates should have credentials for appointment at Full Professor level, including a Ph.D. or other relevant terminal degree in a discipline offered by the College.
