The school psychologist provides a continuum of preventative, developmental, remedial and intervention services as a member of a multidisciplinary team approach within the district’s Response to Intervention (RTI) framework. The school psychologist facilitates the educational, personal, social, and emotional development of students in schools within tier 1 of the RTI model. The school psychologist works in collaboration with the School-Based Team (S-BT), district Learning Support Services Team (LSST), staff and community agencies to assist in the development of supports for students and classrooms. School psychology services are focused within the classroom environment (tier 1) with interventions within the other two tiers (tiers 2 and 3) being made available through consultation with the LSST. Functions School psychology services play a supportive role in student learning with emphasis on student/classroom observation, developing student/classroom interventions, student program planning, program planning and implementation, and the formal assessment/eligibility process. The school psychologist: • provides collaborative consultation in classrooms, at school-based team (S-BT) and at the LSST meetings; • assists with pre-referral interventions, • provides psycho-educational assessments for students referred through the S-BT and LSST; • provides ongoing collaborative planning for students and classrooms; • contributes to the development and progress monitoring of the IEP, and • provides inservice training in the area of interventions, progress monitoring, data collection and/or assessment. The school psychologist also provides consultative services which include: • consultation with teachers, support staff, parents, students and community agencies regarding student strengths and needs, assessment implications, and interventions through which to enhance learning and interpersonal relations; and • collaboration with school-based and/or district personnel to gather classroom-based data, design or implement instructional strategies/interventions, and/or design and implement behavioural interventions. Psychologists may assist school and district staff in providing in-service training for educators and support staff (e.g., behaviour management, observational techniques/data gathering, PBIS, RTI, suicide protocol training, etc.), and participate or assist in program evaluation and research activities. Employment Requirements Professional Certification • • • Certified through the BC Teacher Regulation Branch Certified member of BCASP or a registered member of the College of Psychologists Certification in the BC School Psychologists’ Association Education and Training • • A Masters Degree in School Psychology, Educational Psychology or equivalent; Have the credentials to administer and interpret individual intelligence and curriculum based assessments up to and including Level C as per Ministry of Education guidelines; Additional Requirements • • Experience and training related to school settings; and Proof of clinical supervision, training, and experience in writing reports with appropriate school-based recommendations.
