Second Grade Community Project We are currently studying communities in social studies. Your child will be assigned a building or landmark in our community to present to the class. He/she will construct a model of this building or landmark using small boxes (cereal, shoe, Kleenex, etc.). Your child should be prepared to tell all about their building or landmark and how it serves the community. I would suggest a visit to the building or landmark if possible. Your model should show the outside of the building and the interior. Please leave the “roof” off so the interior is visible. The landmark might include surrounding area and could be built with materials such as toothpicks, clay, etc. Be creative, build your building or landmark out of whatever you want but remember it has to be transported to and from school. Please make sure your child does not use expensive or sentimental toys in this project. Suggestions for creating your building include: *Cover your box with appropriate colored paper and draw the outside. *Draw pictures of the inside and glue them on the walls and floors. *Take pictures of the inside and/or outside of your building and glue them on. *Glue on magazine clippings. *Make a model of inside items with popsicle sticks, toothpicks, q-tips, torn paper, etc. This project should be fun but not overly time consuming. I want you to enjoy this quality time with your child. Community Projects are due: Monday, November 24th. Your child’s building assignment is: _________________________________ Here are a few examples of student created buildings for the Second Grade Community Project.
