Chinese is easy: (Please take careful and detailed notes, together with examples) – Invite students from the West to share what they know about the following: a.

“ I love you.

No verbal conjugation: past tense, present tense and future tense – same verb form: I loved you/I love you.

No gender for nouns, no articles such as “a, an, or the.”

Single and plural forms of nouns are the same.

For example: “one teacher vs. three teachers.”

Congratulations on your first creation of Chinese sentences!

Review the “big picture” – five reasons why Chinese is easy.

Chinese-specific helpful facts: a.

Chinese specific terms: Pinyin – Chinese phonetic system that gives pronunciation to characters.

Hanzi: characters – don’t call them “symbols”! b.

Each character is one syllable: Ni, Hao, Ai, Wo. c.

Pinyin syllable components: initial, final, and tone d.

4 tones and tone marks – we start from the four tones! ma: ma: ma: ma:

We will use two weeks to systematically learn Pinyin: all initials and finals, then all pinyin combinations. Each student will get a full Pinyin Chart. You will have your first speaking test on Pinyin about three weeks from now.

Students will take the test one-on-one with Mrs. Storey.

2.

Two options: 15 dilogues or an oral narrative about yourself and your family 15 – 20 full sentences. Then two to three questions from Mrs. Storey.

3.

3-4 minutes each students.

4.

One point off for each long pause over 3 seconds.

5.

You’ll be graded on Pronunciation, vocab, grammar, fluency, 25% for each part.

6.

Please remain quiet while the speaking test is going on.
