Lesson Plan:
(Remember to use helpers!)
1. Introduction – What/Where is Recycle Utah.
Curbside bins – why recycle is bigger, review of the
four materials. What are the materials made from?
(Glass/Paper/Metal/Plastics)? Show pictures from
Landfill book (10 minutes).
2. Earth puzzle – make it a Silence Contest. Once
they’re finished, turn over a few random pieces to
review the backside. Talk about Mother Earth and
our relation to her, our planet. Start big, boil
down to Park City, their home. We are all connected.
Incorporate Air, Water, Food and Energy – all are
necessary. (10 minutes).
3. (Optional if time) Recycle/Trash Card Game. Ask
for two volunteers to represent “Trash” and
“Recycle.” Have the class go through the cards
designating what to put where (include a Misc.
Category for compost, e-waste, etc…). Have fun with
this! Review results. (10 minutes)
5. The Wump World by Bill Peet – read it! Finally,
what are two things you learned today – show of
hands? (10 -15 minutes)
Key Concepts:
a. Our personal connection to Mother Earth and
how we can nurture that.
b. The importance of recycling and a review of
harder-to-recycle materials.
