Roman Legions were also called Legionaries. To be a Legionarie you need to be a Roman citizen. In the beginning people were volunteers. Every year a senior military officer would select 6000 men between the ages of 25-50 year old. The Roman Legions were the most organised and well trained army in history. The Roman Legions were led by a centurion. They weighed a ton but they were still fit, strong and healthy. When the soilders weren’t fighting they weren’t relaxing either they were building walls and bridges to protect their city and not let enemies come in and invade their city. The soldiers armour was made out of small plates of bronze linked together and sewed on to a leather pad. They wore a helmet. To be a Legion you leather and bronze strengthened with iron. The soilders also had to wear leather sandals with bobnails on the soles to strengthen them. With the sandals they wore metal leg protection also known as ‘greaves’ . Last but not least the soldiers also had woollen leggings in the colder regions of the Empire. The Roman Legion soilders had Roman battering rams to cover and protect the soldiers from stones, spears and arrows or iron bolts. The other weapons they had were the onager catapult, Roman siege tower and the trireme. The soilders would also carrier 2 javelin. The javelins were about 2 meters. The javelin could stab through 2 cm worth of metal. The soldiers also carried a knife for combact at close quarters, and a short sward for thrusting and slashing enemy soilders. By: Wing Ching
