Oil Demand Consultant (AP12052) Region-Asia Pacific Division-Research Job Type-Full-Time Oil Demand Consultant Role Purpose The Oil Demand Consultant will be part of Wood Mackenzie’s oil demand consultant team, which sets the message and methodology for the consultancy business, providing demand forecasts for a number of Wood Mackenzie services and consulting projects. The focus of activities will be to provide products and services focused on petroleum demand at main product and sector levels primarily for China while supporting similar work of other North Asian countries. The successful candidate will work in a small global team developing knowledge on oil product demand, forecasting both short and long term trends, occasionally supporting consultancy assignments. The role offers the opportunity for an individual to develop forecasting techniques and knowledge through interactions with demand specialists in other regions, while working closely with Wood Mackenzie downstream consultant teams in Singapore and Beijing to integrate views on product markets in China and across Asia Pacific countries. In line with Wood Mackenzie’s position as an integrated energy consulting firm, developing views on alternative technologies and consequent demand responses will be important, as well as the impact of environmental legislation on oil demand. Main Responsibilities The China Oil Demand Consultant will be required to perform job responsibilities as directed by his or her direct supervisor or other more senior staff members in a manner that meet their standards and expectations. The main job responsibilities include the following. Focus primarily on China while also taking a role in consulting about the broader region. Identify and use the necessary data for short and long term forecasts of oil product demand to provide consultation services. Work closely with Wood Mackenzie’s economists, and energy, oil and downstream consultants to develop an integrated energy view, and provide expert and appropriate oil demand input into a range of products and services, focussing primarily on China Deliver written material for monthly reports on short term oil demand trends, and regional/country outlooks for the long term. Write Insight reports on demand or related market issues. Respond to internal and external enquiries regarding China‘s demand forecasts Present the demand outlook to clients and prospects in meetings and via web-calls. Support development and enhancement of models for oil product demand for a variety of end uses, including optimisation of the company’s proprietary database. Contribute to the development of the integrated downstream product suite to enhance the delivery and coverage of the existing products. Provide technical advice to consulting mandates in conjunction with the consulting team. Key Competencies The China Oil Demand Consultant will be required to satisfy his or her direct supervisor or other more senior staff members that he or she is competent on the job, including being competent in the following areas. A good knowledge of the status of petroleum demand in China and/or Asia, and a strong capability to identify key drivers (such as macroeconomic indicators, industrial/consumer activities, domestic fuel prices, vehicle fuel efficiency gains, and related policies/regulations) so that their effects on petroleum demand are quantified in a model. Degree in economics, statistics, political science or other relevant discipline. Experience as a planner or economist in the petroleum or an oil-user industry such as automobiles would be a particular advantage. Excellent English language skills combined with fluency in Chinese would be a particular advantage. Excellent problem solving and technical skills, including advanced knowledge of Excel. A good understanding of quantitative methods and their application, preferably with experience of demand modeling. Strong communication skills, both written and oral; ability to communicate key oil demand concepts and trends (both internal and external). Ability to work within tight deadlines. The ability to work as part of a team involving multiple locations and time zones. The successful candidate will be willing to travel to Wood Mackenzie and client offices. A commitment to excellence in order to meet high quality standards expected internally and externally. This role could involve some time in Boston and Singapore for induction purposes.
