We encourage students to understand the extensive histories, cultures, and knowledge bases in order to examine how race and interrelated categories of ethnicity, gender, class, and sexuality impact the lives of people in the United States and around the globe. The department is interdisciplinary and offers and Undergraduate Major and Minor, and a Graduate Certificate in Comparative Ethnic Studies. The major emphasizes critical thinking, the construction of grounded social theory, data gathering and comparative analysis. The major also fosters developmental, experiential learning of appropriate skills in research design and implementation. A principal focus of our curriculum is the recognition and incorporation of multicultural definitions and values that can become part of the University’s mission. Academic Advising The Ethnic Studies Academic Advisor assists students in clarifying their interests, values, and goals and helps students relate these to academic programs and educational opportunities. Students are encouraged to meet with their Academic Advisors once per semester To schedule an appointment and to view walk-in advising times and advising announcements please log into: http://www.colorado.edu/aac/pas.html Career The Ethnic Studies major provides a broad liberal arts education with skills in critical thinking, comparative analysis, social theory, data gathering and analysis, and oral and written expression. These skills, coupled with its emphasis on diversity make the Ethnic Studies degree particularly useful for the 21st century. It provides students with appropriate training for fields such as law, education, medicine, public health, social work, journalism, business, urban planning, politics, counseling, international relations, and creative writing, as well as university teaching and research. Independent Study Independent study is an opportunity to work with individual direction from a faculty member on a topic of mutual interest within Ethnic Studies. Students are allowed to pursue independent study only with completed ‘Academic Agreement’ and departmental approval. Students must first meet with the ETHN advisor to discuss the nature of their independent study. Independent study credits approved are ETHN upper-division elective credits. Honors The Ethnic Studies Honors Program is designed to give students the opportunity to pursue rigorous interdisciplinary research and writing under the close supervision and mentorship of an Ethnic Studies faculty member. Students also receive public recognition at commencement and at the Honors Program convocation for successful completion and defense of their thesis. Students should have 3.3 overall GPA and 3.3 GPA in ETHN and meet with the ETHN advisor. Study Abroad CU Boulder’s study abroad programs offer over 300 pre-approved programs, including excellent options for Ethnic Studies majors.
