Writing the nature essay
Sportsman’s Paradise
Sun rise is within minutes as we rushed to beat the break of dawn. From the still of the
night, the churping of crickets breaks the silence, nearby. We feel the calm yet quiet rippling
effects of the river current, as we launch the boat into the water. As we take off with all of our
gear, the turbulence of the engine breaks the silence of the dawn. A neighbor’s dog barking at us
from a distance away, from the direction where a bright, porch light was reflecting off the roof of
a riverfront house nearby. A silhouette reflection of the house was sculptured by the reflection of
the light casted onto the river current. Flying bugs are out in small packs this morning, due to our
presence, as we cause disturbance to the outdoors. As the sunrise breaks the horizontal brim of
the atmosphere, we had just reached our first of three favorite fishing spots. I noticed a dragonfly
perched on the rail of the boat, danced off the boat and onto a water lily pad next to the deep
marsh. As I stared at the beautiful textures of different colors of the dragonfly, its green eyes,
black, crystal wings and dark blue-green striped body, I was startled by a very big splashing
noise that whipped and lashed out at the lily. That dragonfly was nowhere to be seen, and the lily
was split in several sections. Ohhh that sucks for the dragonfly, he was someone’s breakfast this
morning…

Writing the travel essay
The Not-So-Exotic
Malaysia
I was excited to make a trip to Malaysia in 1997. Once I arrived to see the city and the
country, it was ok, nothing spectacular or exciting. When I was walking through the rural to the
metropolitan areas, the scenery looked like a really low quality movie, a “B” rated movie. Every
building, whether it was commercial or residential, the buildings were all lacking paint. Some
buildings were somewhat unsure if they were residential or commercial. Several areas of the
streets needed road repairs. The commerce in this country was seriously lacking, because the
economic level was almost in poverty stage.
Since this morning, I and three other were touring the countryside. By the time we
decided to have lunch, it was already 2:30pm. We found this Chinese restaurant and decided to
dine. I was so hungry, I could eat a horse! Well, on the menu, there was no horse cuisine, but I
finally chose the beef and broccoli meal. Within 10 minutes, my lunch was served. It smelled
really good, the garlic and onion peels added to the beef and broccoli, with a bowl of white rice.
The flavor and the texture were delicious, until I tasted the beef. Beef didn’t taste like beef back
at home and it was so tough it felt like I was chewing on a really tough licorice. My friend Sean
asked me what dish I ordered. I told him beef and broccoli. He asked me if we had seen any
cattle in this country. I said no, as I started to stare at the mystery meat on my fork, and tried to
guess what it was. That portion of the meat looked like a small ear.
As I looked around, low behold, my eyes caught a small head with beady eyes popped up
above the countertop of the bar behind us. It hopped onto the counter, and darted for the back
door. It was a short hair, long bodied rat!!! I was about to barf…I couldn’t imagine eating
anything else in Malaysia.
