CLASS SYLLABUS – MR. PEITZ 2015-2016 6th Grade Social Studies/IB Social Studies Email: gregoryg.peitz@cms.k12.nc.us Room: A612 Website: http://gregorypeitz.weebly.com 6th Grade Framework: · Quarter 1: Era One – The Beginnings of Human Society, and Era Two Early Civilizations and the Emergence of Pastoral Peoples, 4000 B.C.E.-1000 B.C.E. (Ancient Mesopotamia, Indus River Valley, Ancient Egypt, Ancient China, Ancient India) · Quarter 2: Era Three – Classical Traditions, Major Religions, and Giant Empires, 1000 B.C.E. – 300 C.E. (Dynasties, Ancient Africa, Meso-America, Ancient Greece) · Quarter 3: Era Four – Expanding Zones of Exchange and Encounter, 300 C.E.– 1000 C.E. (Ancient Rome, Byzantine Empire) · Quarter 4: Era Five – Intensified Hemispheric Interactions, 1000 C.E. – 1450 C.E. (Fall of Empires, Middle Ages) Class Expectations: Teachers expect scholars to be responsible for their own actions and to make good choices that reflect our school’s character traits. Expectations in our classroom include: 1. Come to class on time and prepared with all materials (JMA’s Tardy Policy will be enforced for scholars repeatedly arriving late to their classes). 2. Follow directions and classroom procedures the first time they are given. 3. Receive permission to speak or leave your seat. 4. Be respectful of all people and property. Required Materials: Scholars are required to keep a section in their binder for Social Studies for returned class materials. This serves as a tangible resource outside of class. It is also a good idea to keep all graded work until grades are verified on PowerSchool. Copies of assignments can be found on my web site in the event any are misplaced or lost under “Documents.” We will rely on Discovery Education’s Social Studies Techbook and Google Classroom. Parents are also encouraged to sign up for ClassDojo and Remind to monitor class participation and behavior, both positive and negative. Scholars are encouraged to carry colored pencils, safety scissors, and a glue stick in their supplies for class projects. Technology Policy: JMA’s Technology Policy aligns with the CMS Cell Phone Policy stating that scholars must keep cell phones and personal technology off and inside of a book bag at all times during the school day unless a teacher has given consent for instructional use purposes. Parents, please DO NOT text or call your scholar while they are in class. You may contact the school at 980-343-3830 with urgent matters and the situation will be addressed in a manner that does not interrupt classroom instruction. August 2015 Discipline Policy: 1st Verbal warning for minor offenses. 2nd Teacher’s discretion of consequence (seat change, behavior slip, silent lunch, bounce) 3rd Bounce and adherence to the JMA Discipline Plan. *If your behavior is highly disruptive, disrespectful, or dangerous to yourself or others, you will be removed from the classroom immediately and required to call a parent! I will use ClassDojo to monitor and track scholar behavior. Please refer to the sign-up sheet that went home the first day of school for more information. Homework Policy: It is important for all assignments to be turned in ON TIME. At J.M. Alexander Middle School, we encourage students to be organized and keep up with their assigned work. Informal assignments can be turned in one day late for reduced credit. Failure to turn in work will result in a grade of “0.” Long-term formal assignments where due dates are given weeks in advance ARE NOT given extra time due to absences. (i.e. Johnny is conveniently absent the due date for his Middle Ages castle project and comes back to school two days later expecting additional time. Johnny DOES NOT receive additional time since the due date was given far in advance.) Make-Up Work Policy: Scholars are responsible for obtaining make-up work after an absence. All missed handouts are in the “While You Were Out” folders in the front of the classroom, and found on my website so that they can be printed home during an absence. Work assigned prior to an absence will not be given an extension and is due the day the scholar returns to school (e.g. It is Thursday and Alex has a project due Friday. He is absent Friday and returns to school on Tuesday. His project is due with him his first day back, Tuesday.) If a scholar is absent for 3 or more days, it is the parent’s responsibility to contact the teachers for make-up work. I DO NOT give extra credit assignments; however, going above and beyond on certain assignments may earn you bonus points. These opportunities will be announced. In the event a scholar receives ISS/OSS, the scholar is responsible for obtaining any missed work to complete during their assigned consequence time.
