Inventory, Monitoring, Research Catalog 2/28/13 1. Topic Algal Surveys 2. Background Algae species have not been extensively surveyed on Mauna Kea. One species has been found at Lake Wai'au, and another on the snow banks. There are undoubtedly species of algae present in the soils on Mauna Kea. 3. Purpose Determine a baseline survey of algae species on UH managed lands to identify climate change, air quality, ecosystem health, and algae- ecosystem interactions. 4. Research Objectives Establish information of algae locations of both native and non- native species, including algae found in soils, Lake Wai'au, and on snow banks. 5. Management Applications Potential uses of Algal research could: inform of climate change impacts, management of air quality and specific algal populations, and perhaps inform about arthropod- environment interactions. 6. Comprehensive Management Plan (and Sub-Plans) Applicability a. Priority –to be completed b. NRMP Source – Section 2.2-12 7. Desired Outcomes Technical report summarizing project purpose, methods, results, etc. Identify management recommendations to address any existing or potential resource impacts. Provide a baseline data set suitably documented and formatted for use by other researchers and management authority. Prepared by: J.Kirkpatrick
