As a token of appreciation to your host family and translator, we suggest that you bring one small gift for your host family and one small gift for you translator. These gifts do not need to be expensive, just a simple way of saying thank you. Suggestions for the host family - a small Christian plaque or decoration, a candle, house decoration, book mark, etc. Suggestions for the translator - a journal, bookmark, a small cross. Gifts should be given at the end of your trip. Training and Expectations Sharing the Gospel in India is done through story format. At each CK party three stories will be shared: A personal testimony, a “hook” story, and a Gospel story. Your team will practice these three stories before arriving and be ready to hit the ground running by telling them each day. Because the cultures you will encounter are oral cultures and that is how they learn and share, it is crucially important to be as accurate as possible to the biblical record when sharing. All sharing will be done through a translator who knows the stories by heart, but your delivery still matters. (Don’t get too caught up in the production of memorizing and telling, just tell your story as natural as possible. The good news is that God will use His Word as He desires to!) We suggest getting together and audibly practicing each of the three stories with your team in the months leading up to your trip. Your team will break up into smaller groups of 1-3 people and hit multiple distributions each night. For this reason, everyone should be prepared to tell each story. Let God stretch you and see what He can do through you! The stories chosen have proven to be very effective in starting story groups and seeing an evangelistic harvest. In general, the cultures you will encounter are very spiritual in nature. We start out with a story of how Jesus changed your life. A 3-4 minute narrative of what you were like before, how you met Jesus, and how you are different because of it. Next is the “hook” story, which is the story of a man filled with many evil spirits who is completely healed by the power of Jesus. This story sparks interest and curiosity in Jesus. Lastly, the gospel story with dialogue: Zacchaeus is changed after an encounter with Jesus, we share why Jesus came to the earth, and offer the opportunity to respond. You will learn to get a feel for the group each night. In the team teaching format you will be stretched but you will always have your team to back you up. Your translator will take the lead on the evangelistic invitation but we do want those who share the gospel story to be prepared to lead a dialogue with the help of the translator. You’ll get a better feel for it each time you do it. F.A.M.M. provides training resources which are available online. Go to http://www.compassionkits.com/team-training-resources.html to get started. It is the seventhlargest country by geographical area, the second-most populous country with over 1.2 billion people, and the most populous democracy in the world. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the southwest, and the Bay of Bengal on the southeast, it shares land borders with Pakistan to the west; Bhutan, the People's Republic of China and Nepal to the northeast; and Bangladesh and Burma to the east. Religion forms an integral part of Indian life and the norms associated with it. Of the approximately 1.2 billion people in India, over 80% are Hindu. The other religions are represented as follows: Muslims: ± 14% Christians: ± 2.3% Sikhs: ± 2% Buddhists: ± 0.8% Jains: ± 0.4% Indian culture and tradition discourages unnecessary touching or any form of physical contact, especially between a man and a woman, in public. Kissing in public is a not advisable here. It is advisable to shake hands with people, or stick to the traditional Namaste - the popular Indian style greeting (pressing your hands together with all fingers pointing towards the sky in front of your chest and politely say Namaste, while looking at the person you are saying it to). 9 Food In India we consider this an immersion into culture trip. We will be eating the food of the country and the hosts we stay with. It will definitely be a reflection of the local culture. Our FAMM – India team provides hosts homes with a menu of appropriate meals, money to provide and safety procedures for cooking for foreigners. Indians give food as their act of love. In dealing with the food, we follow Jesus’ command in Luke 10, “Eat whatever they give you to eat.” Be prepared to eat a lot and it will be spicy. One of our mottos for missions is, “When God calls your heart, He also calls your stomach!” So, come and be prepared to experience the hospitality and unique foods of India. Transportation In country travel will be arranged by FAMM. You may be traveling via air, train or car to the village(s) where you will be ministering. Accommodations When staying in the villages you will be staying in a host home in the village/area you will be ministering. We do our best to provide the best housing available, but keep in mind you will be staying in host homes. You will be truly incarnational in the sense that you will experience the culture in every way, including your lodging. It will be less comfortable than what most westerners are accustomed to. Some teams will need to bring bedding (sleeping bag is best) and in other cases sheets and blankets will be provided. Be prepared and be flexible. What we can guarantee is that you will have a bed off the floor, some kind of toilet, and some kind of shower. Contact Information Please contact us with any questions. ● U.S.A.
