JOB DESCRIPTION FOR
Lead teacher of Sociology and Citizenship
TLR 2a
You will be line managed by an Assistant or Deputy Headteacher.
Your role is

to maintain and support the Catholic character of the School in accordance with the direction
given by the Governors and expressed in the Mission Statement.


You are required to carry out the duties of a school teacher as set out in the current School Teacher Pay
and Conditions of Service Document. This requires you to carry out such duties as the Headteacher may
reasonably direct from time to time.
KEY AREAS OF SUBJECT LEADERSHIP
As Subject Leader, you will primarily be accountable for the quality of experiences in your subject area
offered to students throughout the school. Key tasks in fulfilling this accountability include:

to be accountable for the highest standards of student achievement within the Sociology and
Citizenship subject areas, monitoring and evaluation of student achievement;
to be accountable for the strategic direction, including leadership and management of the
Sociology and Citizenship subject areas, the development and implementation of school
policies, plans, targets and practices within the context of the school’s aims and policies;
to ensure appropriate curriculum development to make sure the experience students receive is
relevant;
to ensure standards of teaching and learning enable all students to exceed minimum target
grades/levels through the school’s Quality Assurance Framework; ensuring that assessment for
learning underpins practice in the faculty and that: learning is objectively led;
 lessons demonstrate peer and self assessment;
 assessment of students’ work is formative;
to observe the teaching of the Sociology and Citizenship subjects and provide feedback for
improvement;
to lead, develop and enhance the teaching practice of teachers of Sociology and Citizenship,
evaluating the quality of teaching and securing and sustaining effective teaching of the subject;
to effectively line manage teaching staff and deploy teaching and support staff in the Sociology
and Citizenship subject areas.
There are four main areas of accountability; curriculum; development; resources and personnel.
Your role is Subject Leadership i.e. to interpret formal policy in terms of your subject area as set out by the
Curriculum Managers and to deliver these effectively.
TASKS SPECIFIC TO THE SOCIOLOGY AND CITIZENSHIP SUBJECTS

To ensure schemes of work are in place and are regularly updated
2
To coordinate the teaching of Sociology and Citizenship throughout the School
3
To develop the provision of Sociology and Citizenship at each Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 (as
appropriate).
4
To be a good role model and effective teacher Sociology and Citizenship across KS3, KS4 and 5.
CORE TASKS
You are required to:
1
Lead, co-ordinate, monitor and evaluate the work of the subjects in relation to curriculum and
pastoral aspects of students learning and achievement, using the School’s Quality Assurance
Framework (including the Self Evaluation Framework).

Undertake all reasonable precautions to safeguard the health and safety of students and staff at all
times within the departmental area.
3
Keep departmental members up-to-date on national, local and school curriculum developments.
4
Represent the Department at curriculum management meetings and ensure that information from
these meetings is communicated to the Department.
5
Ensure effective communication with and to the member of the Senior Management Team
responsible for the Sociology and Citizenship subject areas.

Lead the Department in ensuring that all students are treated fairly, consistently and with respect,
that opportunities for reinforcing positive self-images are sought, that gender and race discrimination
are actively discouraged.
6
Encourage a teaching environment and ethos which underpins and enhances students’ learning and
rewards students’ achievements.
7
Take active responsibility for formulating fair and consistent standards of discipline within the subject
area and follow up concerns according to the school’s procedures.

Be a key figure in the professional development of the subjects’ staff, the appointment and induction
of new staff and the supervision of student teachers in close liaison with the responsible Senior
Management Team.

Ensure that good communication between the department and parents is developed and
maintained.

Implement and undertake effective processes of self review and development. These should focus
on:

progress of pupils and students
pupils’ attitudes and behaviour
planning
teaching and learning
assessment
management of the subject

TEAM TASKS
You are required to:
1
Liaise closely with Special Needs Co-ordinator with regard to implementing SEN policy.
2
Liaise closely with the Ethnic Minority Achievement Co-ordinator.
3
Liaise with Careers Staff in the career guidance of students throughout the school.
4
Participate in Working Parties on wider issues of importance to your Department.
ADMINISTRATIVE TASKS
You are required to:
1
Provide information and data as required by the school’s administration, DfE, OFSTED, or other
relevant bodies.
2
Review and prepare annually the Department Development Plan in the context of the School
Development Plan.
3.
Identify resources required to support the Department Development Plan and prepare the annual
departmental expenditure bid
4.
Manage efficiently and cost-effectively the resources available to the department ensuring principles
of best value are adhered to
5.
Manage the departmental budget, keeping accurate records of the year’s spending and monitoring
against budget allocation

You are required to:

Be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of students in your care
