Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and Apothecaries’ Hall PhD Fellowship The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and the Apothecaries’ Hall of Ireland are proud to announce a PhD Fellowship to support doctoral research into the history of medicine in Ireland. The Fellowship is worth €7,500 per annum for three years, and will cover the winning applicant’s university fees and associated research costs. Eligibility The Fellowship is open to researchers planning to undertake a PhD relating to the history of medicine in Ireland. Preference may be given to subjects relating to the history of medical education and/or the evolution of medical pharmacology in Ireland from the 17th to the early 20th century. Applicants must be planning to undertake their PhD research at a university on the island of Ireland and it is their responsibility to ensure they meet the admission criteria of their university of choice. Max 250 words Terms and Conditions 1) The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and Apothecaries’ Hall PhD Fellowship consists of a bursary of €7,500 per annum for a duration of three years to support doctoral research into the history of medicine in Ireland. This can either be a PhD programme, or an M Litt upgraded to PhD over three years. 2) Applications for part-time study over a five year period will be considered. In such a case the bursary would be €4,500 per annum for a duration of five years. 3) The Fellowship and all financial arrangements will be administered by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. 4) The Fellowship is open to all researchers wishing to undertake a PhD on the history of medicine in Ireland. 5) The Fellowship can be used to support a PhD at any university on the island of Ireland. 6) It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure they meet the admission criteria of their chosen university. Failure to do so will result in the withdrawal of the Fellowship. 7) An awarding panel, comprising representatives of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and the Apothecaries’ Hall of Ireland and an independent extern, will review all applications and select the successful candidate for the Fellowship. 8) The awarding panel may decide not to award the Fellowship if they feel that none of the applications are of sufficient merit. 9) The decision of the awarding panel is final. 10) The successful candidate will be expected to submit annual reports showing the process of their research. The timely submission of these reports is a condition of the continuation of the Fellowship. 11) These reports must be accompanied by a confidential evaluation of the progress of the successful candidate from their academic supervisor. 12) The Fellowship may be suspended or terminated where it deemed necessary following review of the foregoing information and reports. 13) The Fellowship holder may be asked, from time to time, to contribute updates on their research to the RCPI Heritage Centre Blog and to present on their research at RCPI Heritage Centre events. 14) It is the responsibility of the Fellowship holder to inform RCPI of any change of contact details. 15) Fellowships may not be deferred, other than for eligible career breaks (e.g. maternity leave) or in exceptional circumstances (e.g. illness). The decision is at the discretion of RCPI and AH.
