Job opportunities in this field are excellent and continue to improve with the growth of the medical community in the Bexar County area. As a Certified Surgical Technologist, you are qualified to work anywhere in the United States as well as other countries. Many technologists choose to pursue a career in related areas. A Certified Surgical Technologist may advance to become a Certified First Assistant with additional studies and experience. During your training you will learn theory, surgical procedures, instrumentation and aseptic technique. Through a clinical education course, participating in a minimum of 120 surgical cases as required by accreditation, you will receive valuable clinical experience in a variety of surgical facilities. The surgical technology student will participate in a minimum of 30 general surgery cases (20 of which must be in the first scrub role), and 90 specialty cases (60 of which must be in the first scrub role and evenly distributed between a minimum of five surgical specialties) to include Cardiothoracic, ENT, Eye, GU, Neuro, Ob-gyn, Oral/maxillofacial, Orthopedics, Peripheral vascular, Plastics, and Procurement/transplant. The criteria for the scrub roles are as follows: First Scrub Role: verify supplies and equipment needed for the procedure, set up the sterile field with instruments, supplies, equipment, medication(s), and solutions needed for the procedure, perform all required counts with the circulating RN, pass instruments and supplies to the sterile surgical team members, and maintain sterile technique. Second Scrub Role: has not met all of the criteria for first scrub role, but actively participates in the following: sponging, suctioning, cutting suture, holding retractors, and manipulating endoscopic camera. Observation Role: Do not meet the criteria for first or second scrub role, but must be documented but are not counted towards the 120 case requirement. Upon successfully completing your course work, you will be required to sit for the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.
