UNIVERSITY OF JYVÄSKYLÄ - Faculty of Social Sciences CALL FOR APPLICATIONS Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy Master’s Programme in Cultural Policy Professors, university lecturers, university researchers, post-doctoral researchers and doctoral candidates are assigned to the main research areas of the department. Research and teaching are closely connected. The vacant position is allocated to the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy, in specific to the Master’s Programme in Cultural Policy. The departmental personnel comprises 20 professors, 31 university lecturers and researchers and some 80 doctoral candidates or other research or teaching staff. The number of basic degree (Bachelor’s & Master’s level) students is some 1 270 and the number of post-graduate students 175. The Master's Degree Programme in Cultural Policy is a social science based study programme, connected to many disciplines via teaching and research both in Finland and abroad. Students are offered courses in cultural policy, and in addition they can choose to specialize in one of the following major subject areas at the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy: Philosophy, Political Science, Social and Public Policy or Sociology, Aesthetics and Arts and Culture. The programme leads to a Master of Social Sciences and it qualifies graduates for doctoral level studies. The focus in the program remains in the ways in which culture in a wider sense changes and shapes the lives of the people. This includes changes in culture and art production, media technologies, language, education, economy, politics and policy. In the intersection of the various transformation processes it is crucial to analyse how cultural institutions such as museums, art institutions, education, media, and administration define their roles and re-organize their policies and practices. The social, political, and cultural changes also shape the ways in which collective identities and cultural memory are constructed. Students get excellent capabilities for critical, research-oriented thinking. Graduates work as researchers and lecturers at universities, colleges and other educational institutes; as cultural administrators, policy-makers and managers in international, national and local cultural institutions and arts organizations and as experts, mediators and reporters in the cultural fields. A University Lecturer position, beginning August 1st 2013, or as agreed, and in effect until further notice. The position is in Master’s Programme in Cultural Policy. The emphasis in the position is in teaching of the international cultural policy master’s programme (lectures, workshops, counselling of thesis and practice), development of new teaching methods and platforms and scientific research connected to the field. The participation to the development of the master’s programme and teaching are part of the tasks. Work requires active international networking and publishing. The University of Jyväskylä Regulations § 67 states that members of the teaching and research personnel are obliged, within their respective job descriptions and work plan, to conduct and supervise scientific research, follow the development in their respective disciplines, examine theses and dissertations, teach and enhance teaching practices, provide study counselling, carry out relevant examinations, participate to student selection as well as attend to task derived from membership in the University’s administrative bodies and to other tasks counted as part of their work or assigned to them. In addition, they are to provide the necessary accounts concerning teaching, counselling and supervision, publications and scientific activities, as well as the examinations they have arranged. In accordance with § 58 of the University of Jyväskylä Regulations a lecturer is expected to have a doctoral degree, evidence of international research work, ability to provide research-based, top-quality teaching and supervision. The applicant’s merits are assessed on the basis of scientific work, experience in teaching, as well as pedagogical training, production of textbooks and other teaching materials, other indications of skills achieved in teaching, and if necessary, pedagogical competence demonstrated by trial lectures and other suitable merits. Relevant working experience is regarded as a merit. In accordance with § 65 of the University of Jyväskylä Regulations, a university lecturer is required to complete studies in university pedagogy or equivalent within two years of the beginning of the employment contract, unless studies have already been completed by the time of appointment. According to § 1 of the Government Decree on Universities (770/2009) university teaching and research positions require a full command of the teaching language, Finnish. When considered appropriate, the university can grant exemption from the language proficiency requirements. The teaching language in this position is English. A Lecturer is required to have excellent command of English and ability to teach in English. Finnish language skill is an advantage. Lecturers job-specific salary component is based on the job demands level 05-07 according to the salary system concerning teaching and research personnel at universities (2820,64-3799,56 €/month). In addition, a personal performance-based salary component amounting to the maximum of 46,3% of the job-specific salary component is also paid.
