Name: _________________________ HR: _______ Science 8: Cells, Tissues, and Organ Systems Identifying Cells under the Microscope Date: _____________________ Curriculum Outcomes Addressed: • Distinguish between plant and animal cells (304-5) • Explain that it is important to use proper terms when comparing plant and animal cells (109-13) Identify each of the following as either a plant cell or animal cell, and explain why you chose to classify each as such. Make sure to use proper terminology when explaining why you chose to classify each the way you did. Microscopic Image Cell Type Plant Cell Explanation There is a cell wall; only plant cells have cell walls - animal cells do not. 1 These cells also have a uniform rectangular shape; animal cells have more of a round shape. http://blogs.saschina.org/melisa01pd2016/files/2011/01/Labeled-300x240.png 2 Animal Cell This cell has cilia surrounding it (tiny hairlike structures that help the cell to move); only animal cells have cilia – plant cells do not. It is oval in shape (not rectangular, like http://faculty.clintoncc.suny.edu/faculty/michael.gregory/files/bio%20101/bio%2010 plant cells would be) 1%20lectures/cells/paramecium_stained.jpg 3 Animal Cell There is no cell wall, and three smaller vacuoles – white circular shapes (not one large central vacuole like in plant cell). The shape of the cell is round (plant cells have more of a rectangular shape). http://www.oncoursesystems.com/images/user/9341/10845583/animal%20cell.jpg Kluge 2013 Name: _________________________ HR: _______ Science 8: Cells, Tissues, and Organ Systems There is a chloroplast, and only plant cells Plant Cell have chloroplasts. Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll, which is used during 4 photosynthesis to convert Carbon dioxide and water into sugar (energy). The cells are also green, indicating the presence of chlorophyll. The cells are also rectangular. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_detzCStVbk8/TJgErx2eEzI/AAAAAAAAAEg/sNDyrU1pv_k/s 1600/microscope+chloroplast.jpg Plant Cell The cells have a rectangular shape (they are not circular like animal cells would be). 5 The wall between cells is thick (shows presence of a thick outer cell wall, which is only present in plant cells). http://hilo.hawaii.edu/affiliates/prism/documents/PandAcells.pdf Animal Cell 6 The cell shape is round (not rectangular). There is only a thin outer membrane (cell membrane), and no thick outer cell wall (as would be found in plant cells). http://hilo.hawaii.edu/affiliates/prism/documents/PandAcells.pdf There is one large central vacuole, Plant Cell indicating that it is a plant cell. Animal cells would have a number of smaller 7 vacuoles throughout. There are also chloroplasts surrounding the vacuole (not labeled). The cell also has a thick outer cell wall in addition to the thin inner cell http://biology.unm.edu/ccouncil/Biology_124/Summaries/Cell.html membrane (animal cells have no cell wall).
