The North East United States: A Great Place to Live
The North East United States is a very interesting place. The North East includes ten states
many of which are very densely populated: Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts,
Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Those ten states have
many different mountains, rivers, lakes, bays, land usages, resources, and climate and vegetation
regions.
The North East has many different landforms including mountains, rivers, lakes, other bodies of
water, and plains. First, the Appalachian Mountains are the major mountain range in the North East.
Next, at the foot of the Appalachians there is a piedmont. The piedmont goes from New Jersey out of
the region to Alabama. Furthermore, the two major rivers in the North East are the Delaware River and
the Hudson River. The Delaware River separates New Jersey and Pennsylvania and goes into Delaware.
The Hudson River separates New York and New Jersey and goes into northern New York. To add, other
bodies of water in the North East include Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, the Delaware Bay, and the Atlantic
Ocean. Lake Ontario borders western New York and Lake Erie borders western New York and western
Pennsylvania (and other states not in the North East). The Delaware Bay separates Delaware and
Maryland (which is in the south region) and is connected to the Delaware River and the Atlantic Ocean.
The Atlantic Ocean is located off the eastern coast of the North East (and south). Finally, the Coastal
Plain starts in Massachusetts and goes out of the region to Florida and Texas.
The two climate zones in the North East are the Continental region and the Humid Sub –
Tropical region. The Continental region located in every state in the North East except Southern New
Jersey and Delaware. Places in this region experience hot summers and cold winters. The Humid Sub –
Tropical region is located in Southern New Jersey and Delaware. Places in this region experience hot
rainy summers and mild rainy winters. The three vegetation regions in the North East are the Deciduous
Forest, the Mixed Forest, and a little bit Coniferous Forest. The Deciduous Forest is located in the
middle and southern parts of the North East. One type of vegetation found in this region is a White Oak
Tree. The Mixed Forest is located in the northern part of the North East. One kind of tree found in this
region is a Sugar Maple Tree. The Coniferous Forest is located at the southern tip of the North East.
One type of vegetation found in this region is the Eastern Hemlock Tree.
The North East has many big cities. Two of them, New York and Philadelphia, are in the top ten
in population of cities in the United States. Other big cities in the North East include Boston, Buffalo,
Hartford, and Pittsburgh. All of these big cities and their suburbs result in a very densely populated
region. In the cities, people use the land for manufacturing while almost every place else people use the
land for farming and forests. Some resources found in the North East are zinc, coal, fish, oil and natural
gas.
Many people settle in the North East. They do this because from its big cities to its great
vegetation and climate zones, from Maine to Delaware the North East has a lot to offer.
