Technische Universität Berlin Fakultät VI: Planen – Bauen – Umwelt Institut für Bauingenieurwesen Fachgebiet Baustoffe und Bauchemie Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Dietmar Stephan Studying the effect of a new clay mineral powder on the properties of mortar and concrete This project is proposed as a part of a PhD research. The first and main target of the project is to evaluate the properties of mortar and concrete mixtures which are made with the addition of a clay mineral with the brand name of IonSorb. This powder is a naturally excavated mineral from Russia and consists of different particles, but the dominant mineral is glauconite. The powder is fine and very porous and has the ability to absorb ions (ionexchange capacity). The concept is to make concrete structural elements which would be used as pollution absorbent. The second target of this project is to find the optimum amount for application of Ionsorb to make a proper mix. For this purpose, there are different tests which should be carried out within the next 4 months. The tests are mainly to evaluate concrete mechanical properties such as compressive strength and porosity, and also concrete durability such as water penetration, vapor diffusion, Chloride migration and water absorption coefficient. Since the experiments are in different categories, the time for this work is flexible and mainly depends on the experimental plan, which has to be arranged with the supervisor. The type of work is firstly literature research on the target experiment (in Deutsch or English) and then making and testing mortar or concrete in the concrete lab with different recipes. Tests mentioned above could require in some cases up to 91 days which means that the total experimental plan is possible within 3 to 5 months. The final report should be written in English language.
